I've just spent a good portion of my weekend with some rentals from Netflix. 3 Discs from a British tv series titled 'Foyle's War' from around 2002/2003 starring an Actor I'm unfamiliar with until now, Michael Kitchen. This is marvelous television. A police inspector in rural Britain investigating murders during W.W.II - an unusual theme it would appear. But these are SO well written and performed by an outstanding cast! British or American fans out there? (they also have wonderful background scores as well by someone who's name escapes me.)

Michael Kitchen is a great, and sadly underused actor. His most famous roles are that of Robert Redford´s buddy in OUT OF AFRICA and of an assistant to Pierce Brosnan´s JAMES BOND.

Great actor.

Here's a Dutch fan.

Pretty decent music too.

The music by Jim Parker is always considerably more interesting than the apparently disinterested Michael Kitchen.

You must be joking, he fits the role very well.
You obviously don't understand British detective series.

Kitchen's great. I started following his career after "Out of Africa." I think he's a terrific, understated actor.

Thank you Philipp! I KNEW I'd seen him in something prior to this and I do indeed recall his brief but heartfelt performance as Robert Redford's buddy who has a secret longlasting affair with a Black Woman. And he dearly loves her in spite of everything, leading up to his character's death. Evidentally there are MORE series of this Chief Inspector as well. I love the fact that all this is happening in 1940 while Britain is at War, this makes for very interesting storylines! Marvelous stuff; I'm hooked!

Kitchen is ace. I once saw a film where i think he was a hitman trying to kill some Scandanavian Prime Minister - details escape me as i have hang-over - but it wasn't half bad.

I don't know Foyle's War, but this thread has me interested.

A friend just sent me another British mini series (1998) called Ultraviolet. It is about a group of elite detectives who know there are really vampires in Britain. At first, I wasn't all that interested, but it turned out to be a great 6 part mini series.

A Yank fan here. Have either seen them on the tube, or borrowed the vids from the Library. First rate stuff.

My wife and I watch it every time it appears on local PBS. She says Michael Kitchen was excellent in a recent version of Oliver Twist too.

Thanks for the tips Betenoir. Are you refering to the Roman Polanski 'Oliver Twist' or another tv remake? I don't recall him in the former, unless he was in a minor role.

I first remember Michael Kitchen from OUT OF AFRICA also.

He's had a very extensive career and if you look at his imdb listing I'm sure you'll find he was in something you forgot. As I did with MRS. DALLOWAY and THE RUSSIA HOUSE.

Michael Kitchen - great actor.

I saw him on stage in Newcastle upon Tyne 20 years ago, playing Mercutio in the RSC's Romeo & Juliet of that season. It was set in a more modern-day Verona, and the famous fight scene was based around a car of the time that was on stage. In one hilarous bit of physical comedy, Kitchen broke off the aerial to stab Tybalt (Hugh Quarshie). Of course, it telescoped against Tybalt's chest, leaving the audience in stitches. It was also a nice little nod at the usual cliche of the telescoping knife so often used on stage and in film.

It wasn't a bad little cast, either, given that Romeo was played by one Sean Bean...

As discussed on another thread ...

We now know there have been three post V.E. Day stories - none of which, for me, measured up to the earlier stories but remain superb viewing.

We continue to hope that there will be more ...

Another one here in Virginia. Started watching when PBS ran it on "Mystery" a few years ago, and now have been pouring through it on Netflix and watching the new Cold War iteration/continuation which aired this fall (with new opening credits and a new version of the theme song).

P.S. Anyone else notice that Kitchen was in both in the movie "Russia House" and an episode of Foyle's War entitled "The Russian House"?

Very much liked the first season, but I think it only has gone downhill from there, especially once the war was over. Yet, I still watch, on PBS for the record.

I'm still trying to understand, though, how in this day anyone can name their daughter "Honeysuckle"? I'm sure Honeysuckle Weeks is fine with it, maybe even proud, which is fine, but I wouldn't do that to a little girl, at least not in the states, though kids here are given far worse names.

I enjoy the series very much; I also have the release of the score. Top notch.
