I have to admit that I have never really fallen for the music of Graeme Revell. Many of his scores are totally fogettable to my ears, let me mention Freddy vs Jason, High Crimes, Collateral Damage, Blow, Bride Of Chucky, Phoenix, Suicide Kings, The Basketball Diaries, Strange Days, Hear No Evil, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Child's Play 2, Dead Calm...the list probably goes on. The only scores of his that I liked were The Negotiator and The Siege (especially the Siege End Credits that are sadly missing on the Varese CD). That song with Lori Carson he wrote for Strange Days was nice too. Of course, there are dozens of scores of his that I haven't heard. What I feel is missing in Revell's music is the ability to write tunes and themes that can be remembered even after the film is over. There seems to be too much ATMOSPHERE in his music. As mentioned, The Negotiator is an exception, where he shows that he CAN if he just wants to. Any Revell recommendations for CDs that can be listened to in the living room?

I really liked DEAD CALM way back when, as well as THE CROW... but even so I have to admit it's not much more than a riff on Peter Gabriel's LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST (which is one of my favorite scores of all, hence my sympathy for Revell in this case).

I've liked some of his scores; THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE and BODY OF EVIDENCE are two early ones of his that get the occasional spin. More recently I was pleasantly surprised by ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. But a lot of his stuff has been pretty blah - soundwash rather than music (THE FOG).

Graeme Revell is far from being a mediocre composer. The fact that he doesn't use the leitmotif or even the obvious motif / theme approach usually, but relies on modern techniques, dissonance and even atonal / serialism or even 12-note stuff in some scores instead, doesn’t make him any worse than anyone else working out there today, imo. Also, Get RED PLANET CALL OF DUTY : BIG RED ONE CALL OF DUTY 2 CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK And then we talk The 13th warrior rejected is also a very fine score and his contributions to SIN CITY are interesting as well.
