This is unquestionably the craziest soundtrack I own (I also have the DVD, which also easily qualifies as the weirdest film in my collection). Here's what I wrote in my Elfman Buyer's Guide:

"If you merged the absurd humour of Monthy Python with madcap vaudeville histrionics, Ed Wood cardboard props and abstract street theatre performance, that still wouldn’t sufficiently describe this utterly crazy film by Richard Elfman. Shot in black/white, it is an Alice in Wonderland-like story about a journey into a “fifth dimension” where a league of weird creatures roam about. Elfman’s music (performed by the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo) is equally eclectic. You’ll find farting noises, synthesized chamber music, indie pop, charlestons and french vaudeville tunes, among other things. The out-of-print Varese soundtrack simply has to be heard to be believed. There are few traces of the big and bold orchestral style we have come to know so well, but at least it showcases Elfman’s extreme versatility and familiarity with various musical idioms. And his sense of humour."

Great stuff! smile

Nobody has any relationship to this soundtrack?

Well, not really what you'd call a relationship. Oh, The Forbidden Zone and I went out once or twice, but The Forbidden Zone just isn't my type; I mean, we can still hang out and go to the mall and stuff.

i think the only bit of Forbidden Zone i've heard is on the Darkened Theatre vol 1 compilation. A nice piano piece i think, or am i remembering the wrong thing?

It's a nice slice of early Elfman - the DVD has a really good extra on the early days of The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.

The CD does leave off a couple of selections - the Josephine Baker song, sung in the classroom, and "Pico and Sepulveda" - my guess would be due to rights issues.

I've seen reference that Elfman composed music for Martin Brest's early film HOT TOMORROWS. Has anyone got any solid info on what the film and score are like?

Yeah, probably. Those are two nice songs, however.

As far as I know, Elfman only composed the song "Johnny" for this film, which was performed on-screen by the Mystic Knights. Being from 1977, this is the earliest Elfman film work that I am aware of. The film itself is about a writer and his obsession with death.

I watched FORBIDDEN ZONE for the first time yesterday. It's as wacky as Thor describes it, reminding me most of a live action Max Fleischer cartoon. I think I'll stick with my LP of the soundtrack because of the two extra songs on it.

Apparently the black-and-white film was colorized by writer-producer-director Richard Elfman in 2008, and that one-minute-longer color version was also included on the British Blu-ray that was released in 2012.

I thought this would be out of print, but it appears to be fairly readily available at Amazon.co.uk. Having (probably too loudly) claimed to own every Danny Elfman score, I now feel bad for not having this one... oops.

At least one of the US DVDs has an isolated score (including the aforementioned Josephine Baker song and Pico and Sepulveda), which sadly didn't make it onto the UK blu-ray.

Elfman did a good job with the colourisation of it. Looks real (enough) and he changes background colours throughout the scene to give it the feel of being in The Sixth Dimension.

Maybe something to do with the forthcoming FORBIDDEN ZONE 2.
