But what about your batter and your butter? (Sorry.) Seriously, well and truly said.

I never liked Tchaikovsky (save for "The Nutcracker Suite").

I never liked Tchaikovsky (save for "The Nutcracker Suite").

Although I have a lot of music by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky (Windows Media tells me it runs to over 57hrs ...) there are multiple recordings of a number of works, be it the symphonies or concert overtures. I'm not particularly taken with an album of arias (it probably needs a few more listens) but there's hardly anything else I don't like.

Maybe you've heard the works and they don't work for you but his magnificent Symphony No.4 in F minor, Op.36 is a joy from start to finish. For shorter works do try Capriccio Italien, Op.45 which is joyous ... and his Serenade for String Orchestra in C major, Op.48 is pure melody.

Last year we attended a concert performed by Nicola Benedetti and friends, the draw being Vivaldi's Violin Concerto, Op.8 "Le Quattro Stagioni" ... undoubtedly superb ... but the post interval performance of Tchaikovsky's String Sextet in D minor "Souvenir de Florence" was the highlight of the evening.

Don't give up on Tchaikovsky yet.

Mitch
