I recently bought this CD and it's so charming.
Please tell me more of you have it!!
The Cd contains a story book and some spoken word tracks but also contains 2 other tracks of score, one at 15.00 mins and one at 6.00 mins roughly.

What a good composer Howard Blake is (English of course lol), and how he orchestrates is amazing - I know it's old but I haven't heard anything this good for a while.....

That was until Morricone's Nostromo arrived!!!

I have on 7" somewhere the 1985 single release of WALKING IN THE AIR, arranged by John Altman and sung by Aled Jones. The instrumental is stunning.

I play this MANY times around Christmas. The music is so so beautiful and stunning. This is one of those few times that the music is ALL you need for the movie, no dialogue is needed. Excellent CD and it should be in every film score collectors hands.

Sure wish there was a place to pick this one up in the States... I love Blake's haunting music!

Yes it's hard to find in the states, but I got a copy from amazon.com the UK version for about the same price of a regular CD here and funny thing is, it was shipped from Florida, though he/she was selling on amazon.com UK. So check it out okay. I just looked here is the link.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000277CK/qid=1147023807/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/026-1885019-9923635
if you don't know the currency exchange just put up a quick message on this board and some nice person from UK would be able to help!!

I was intrigued by this CD because I like Blake's music very much, The Duellists in particular. I am also interested in putting together a winter CD, and this album looks like it might contain some music that I could use. I found a copy on Amazon and ordered it.

FLASH GORDON is not a particularly good listening experience (I traded it away), but I've always wanted to check out THIS one. I remember watching the animated film many times as a kid (during the Christmas holiday) and being without sound, it was carried entirely by the score.

No, I felt it wandered all over the place, didn't have any striking themes (beyond very brief excerpts of Queen's famous "Flash" motif) and lots of aggressive action music without direction. It was a rushed score, and it shows.

Walking on the Air is great. The rest of it...eh it's nothing TOO great, but pretty good. I'd never buy the CD as it is now, with the score twice and the narration.

Though if, say, Chandos did a Howard Blake CD with the whole score...

A wonderful score! I was never able to find it in the US, so when my parents went to live in England (when I was in college), I asked them to look for The Snowman CD (and I also sent my mom hunting in the Metrocentre for all those Silva Screen CDs!).

There's nothing wrong with having the score twice on the CD. How about skipping the dialouge tracks as I do?

I have listened to all of it now and it really, really is a stunning piece of work.

I must ask why has Blake not done more scoring jobs?

This is one of the treasures on my Xmas music shelf. There are other recordings which feature different arrangements of "Walking in the air." But the original score is as beautiful as the animated visuals for which it was composed.

The Snowman is PERFECT to listen to when it's snowing outside. I mean its perfect and I must say the animated movie is also wonderfuul. At Christmas I always watch Santa Claus the Movie, Pracer and the Snowman.

Sorry, but I'm with Thor on this one. I LOVE Blake's The Snowman (one of my top scores for sure) - and I LOVE the Queen CD for Flash Gordon (go on - strike me down! - I don't care ;-) )

However... having finally obtained the "SuperTracks" official promo of Flash Gordon, The Score recently [after being CONNED by the supercollector.com site many years ago.. which is another story..] I too was left disappointed.

It's a good score, but not a great one. The real star of the show musically in Flash Gordon is definitely Queen's contribution - though Blake's "Rocket launch" theme (included on BOTH CD releases) is _awesome_

That's my take on it anyway.

... and on the subject of Blake's The SNOWMAN, has anyone else heard that Walking In The Air (or a version of it..) was used by Michael Mann is his mis-firing Nazi/Horror movie "THE KEEP" in 1983?

I know this film well, but have yet to properly notice Walking In The Air in amongst the synth. themes by Tangerine Dream..

Did I dream up this connection, or can someone else please confirm that Walking In The Air WAS featured in THE KEEP?

John, confused, England.

In case you haven't seen it, Howard's official web site lives here:

http://www.howardblake.com/music/Film-TV-Scores/

(direct link to his film/TV works)

I was fortunate enough to exchange a few emails with him a couple of years ago. At the time, he indicated that there might one day be a CD release of his work on the effective "Sequel" to The Snowman - "The Bear".

Sadly, this never seemed to materialise..

John, the TD arrangement of the Snowman Theme is the final song used in THE KEEP.

Absolutely love this work. As a few of you have said before, it's incredibly difficult to find the album here in the states - but since they put it on a new edition DVD, perhaps a rerelease will follow.
