Well, mine arrived today. Can't say I know how it sounds on an SACD player 'cos I ain't got one.

Don't get excited about the "extra track" though. It's just a cut-and-paste medley of bits from other tracks on the album. It's a nice track for compilations.

Artwork's a bit lazy if you want my opinion but of course it's the music wot counts. And it really is vintage 80s Barry.

Cheers

For the cover, it seems they dont know if Barry really COMPOSED the music for that film... smile

And you don't even have to look close at the lettering to pixelation round the edges, like it's a really low resolution print. The photos are really poor reproduction too. Yes, the art and print is very disappointing. However, as I said above, it's the music that counts. Thanks to Label X for bringing this title to SA-CD.

Cheers

Has this score been remixed and presented in 5.1 surround for SACD?

I haven't either. I thought it might work on my DVD home theatre setup, which is surround sound, but although it played fine, only two speakers had any music coming from them. Pity!!

One curious point. The back of the booklet says "Recorded in Prague." Does this refer to the re-mix?

Are there any new liner notes?

Pasting suites together is something Mr. Lasher seems to like very much. He did it for Sisters, Citizen Kane and Night Digger. I don't like those filler programms and would have expected some additional production values.

SAE sells it it for 16.95, it's a bit cheaper thant Buysoundtrax. Some competition now.

There are some new liner notes but they are mainly about JB and the film. A pity Jon Burlingame wasn't asked to write something.

I don't really see the point of that suite, I admit, but I think he just wanted a longer CD.

Incidentally, since I don't have a CD player that plays Super Audio, I have no idea how it works or what the difference would be. Of course there was no reason to suppose it would have worked as surround sound!

If you don't have an SA-CD player, but are thinking of getting one, you could ask some Hi-Fi shops if you can audition some kit and use the Frances CD.

Of course, you could do that even if you're not really thinking about buying a player (auditioning a player doesn't leave you with any obligations), though that would be a bit cheeky.

Why, you little tinker!

Better still, wait until QVC is selling a player, buy it, listen to Frances for 30 days, then send it back and get a full refund. Voila!

Just picked this up this Barry I hadn't heard before. Very nice stuff and a hit with the wife. smile

I was wondering if this was truly a SA-CD. I guess so. smile

There were two versions, one was a regular CD, the other was a hybrid SACD.

This is one of my favourite Barry scores, very pleased when this was released albeit with the disappointing artwork as already mentioned. I didn't realise there was 2 releases, I also have the SACD version.

It's funny reading what you wrote years ago.

Yes, I think FRANCES is an extremely strong John Barry score. Very well formed melodies and counter melodies, all richly orchestrated in the typical John Barry style. It's thematic, narrative, glamorous, melancholy and perfectly emotive.

John Barry seemed to respond to this kind of subject extremely well. It was a forté of his.

Frankly, this score stands on a table and urinates to uproar and applause all over so many of today's scores.

;-)

Cheers

I'd go one further than "extremely strong Barry score" and say it's the finest score Barry ever composed. The movie is excellent as well. Harry and Frances' last walk at the end is one of Barry's greatest scoring achievements ever (IMO) and almost always brings a tear to the eye.
