...the earliest recordings from Bernstein sound much smaller than the originals...

...I think the earliest Bernstein release (Helen of Troy, Summer place, the Miracel, Sillver Chalice) used as few as 35 players. Also, Bernstein keeps away from the largest pieces in Silver Chalice and goes for pieces that used fewer players.

Thank you, Joe, for that information. Even a casual listen to Elmer's SILVER CHALICE would lead one to the same conclusion.

For me, the series got better when he did Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Wuthering Heights, and Young Bess.

I agree completely. It's too bad that SILVER CHALICE didn't come later in the series.

I've got my $200+ stashed away, but could anybody offer a hint as to which label may be releasing these? Just to make it easier to check for an announcment.

Our very own FSM and Lukas Kendall will be the hero here, so you know we'll get the very best.

And for those who must know, yes, KINGS OF THE SUN will be included. The boxed set will be released within two months. That's all I can say, folks!

Save your pennies now...

You know, I've been thinking- $200.00 is quite reasonable considering you're getting, what, 14 discs? I'm sure it will be a beautiful set!

Just going over this really interesting old thread. We are very lucky to have this marvelous box set after more than 10 years it still remains one of the most enjoyable regal releases. I would say that this FSM box set up the standard for all the other box sets in the future.

I was wondering if the Film Music Journal that Bernstein published is still available?

I agree, Amer, very happy to have this set.
The bad thing is, every time it is brought up, I have that urge to go spend most of the day relistening to it all....thanks a lot, so long Sunday!!! ;-)

I just wanted to bump this thread. I pulled out my copy this morning and spun the some of these. Such a terrific collection and truly a treasure to have.

I listened to The Thief of Baghdad in anticipation of the new complete score recording coming soon.
