I`ve just watched some popular current indian films.
While the films themselves were a bit too silly for me, I`ve really enjoyed some of the scores.

Especially the films "Main Hoon Na" (score by a composer named Ranjit Barot) and also "Kal Ho Naa Ho" had very nice melodic orchestral scores.

Apparently there are song soundtracks of those films available.

Does anyone know if the scores are released as well ?

Virtually all Bollywood films have only one CD release that features the songs, and usually 1-2 token instrumental themes from the film. It's rare to find any other music from these films; in the Indian market, the underscore is simply not considered important.

Nice to see that there is interest in Bollywood film music. Interestingly Ive grown up watching all the films, its so much part of the Pakistani culture..

Its the songs which make or break the film. All songs are play backed and shot with actors ala Moulin Rouge. Which also parodied Indian Cinema (Chama Chama!)

The underscore which has rarely appeared in the film albums but not the trends are risjng owing to the major divcersification in music and sound that orchestral or intrumental sections are appearing. Kudos to A.R. Rahmans music. His BOMBAY theme(1994) blew me away. Im a full fledged orchestral freak and using eastern intruments and orchestra just worked wonderfull in that piece.

Some major hits recently were:

VEER ZARA & DEVDAAS

Although neither my wife nor I are Indian, we've gotten into Bollywood films the last few years, and some NRI friends of ours back in California laugh and say that, "we know more about these actors and films than they do!"

When we lived in the SF Bay area, we would trek down to Fremont occasionally and see first-run Bollywood films at the Naz-8 Cinema. Our absolute favorite, hands-down, is "Lagaan" -- not only a great Bollywood movie, but one of our favorite films of all time. (A close second is "Dil Chahta Hai.")

A. R. Rahman is a particular favorite of mine, too; I love his scores for "Lagaan," "Taal," "Earth: 1947" and others.

Finally, my wife and I saw the stars of Lagaan, and Aishwarya Rai, on stage in South San Francisco a few years back, and yes, it's true -- Ash is the most beautiful actress on the planet. Put virtually any Hollywood starlet next to her, and the Hollywood actress would look like a George Romero zombie in comparison.

Hi,

The situation has changed over a period now and background scores (also called re-recording) are given much importance nowadays.

Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, who has scored for more than 900 films in South Indian languages, has been adopting this technique of using thematic score using Indian and Western Classical music base for the past 2 decades. Some of the samples can be heard in his official site.

Agreed 100%. A magical film that pulled me in right away & never let go. If memory serves, there's a 2-CD score/song combo available somewhere. GREAT stuff!

p.s. I've seen Bollywood films being made on location on a few of my travels in India, Nepal and Mauritius. I didn't know who any of the Actors and Actresses were but there were always many locals hanging around hoping to get an autograph or a photo.

I also got paid for two days work as an extra while I was in the Indian state of Goa, it was £5 per day if I remember right.

In India £5 goes a long Loooooonnng way!wink

Eddy, are you serious? If there's a 2-CD set for "Lagaan," I'd LOVE to have it! Please let fill us in if you have any more details about this. Thanks!

Ah, okay. Sadly, this is a bonus "songs sampler" CD (which are often included with Bollywood soundtracks.) The songs are from various films, and aren't connected with the main score.

Incidently The President of Nepal, his daughter is of Indian origin is a Bollywood actress who played the muslim girl who married a hindu man in BOMBAY scored by A.R RAHMAN.

And Yes, ASHWARIYA RAI is a goddess but I prefer the beauty of Sushmetha Sen.

Sushmita Sen's dance number "Mehboobha Mere" in the film "Fiza" is one of my favorite Bollywood scenes of all time. It's tough to imagine a sexier dance number (and my wife absolutely loves her clothes in that sequence.)

A close runner-up is Madhuri Dixit in the notorious "Choli Ke Peeche" number from "Khal Nayak," of course. (A song that is simultaneously incredibly irritating and amazingly catchy. We've played this for some people, and half LOVE it; the other half want to jump out a window.) It helps if you see the video it's attached to, of course. :-)

Finally, I also love Urmila's number in "Kambakth Isqh" from "Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya" -- that song just ROCKS.

Just bought and listened to A. R. Rahman's
'Meenaxi'. I am astounded. Reminds me of hearing
'Revolver' for the first time. Especially the
track Noor-Un-Ala. This is the most joy-filled
music I've ever heard.
