I'm listening a lot to RUDY in these days. It was since a very long time I didn't grab it and put it on my stereo...

What a lovely, beautiful piece of art is it! It's a genuine sentimental score, graced by elegant writing for strings and woodwinds especially. And I had the great luck even to hear it live, conducted by Jerry himself, at the Royal Albert Hall in 2001! smile

While listening to it I realized something I didn't quite catch before... this score was surely a LARGE inspiration for Alan Silvestri's touching FORREST GUMP. Therea re similarities in the use of woodwinds and in some melodic lines. I know Silvestri is a Goldsmith devotee, but I think he draw more than a simple inspiration from RUDY. BTW, I happen to love FORREST GUMP too, it's an elegant, warm and competently written score.

Did anyone catch similarities between these two works?

I believe Goldsmith singled this score out as his favorite in the final interview he took part in. From listening to it, it's easily to tell Goldsmith had great affection for the project.

It's certainly not my favorite Goldsmith score, but I do still love it.

Rudy was the first score that really got me listening to dramatic scores. Before then I was mainly interested in action/adventure scores, but I heard the theme in the terrific Courage Under Fire trailer and picked it up immediately - haven't regretted it since!

I caught the last few minutes of this movie on television about a week ago. I was overwhelmed with this rush of emotion as Goldsmith's glorious music brought home (yet again) the great loss that film music (and all music, truly) has suffered. I cried.

A very passionate 'little' score...

I would've liked less music in the film, because there's no real tension/dramatic bow frmo beginning to end... it all has to happen in The Final Game.

...the standing ovation was justified!!

There are many threads based on this score ... and over the years I've always wondered why it receives so much - politely - negative comment.

Well, I've just had the chance to hear the score, for the first time, courtesy of Tidal streaming service ...

... and I still wonder why this score has not had the usual JG support. It is typical - through and through JG ... it couldn't be more so.

It's now added to my to buy list ...

I have no idea what you're talking about, man, but Rudy is a beautiful, beautiful score that jumps off the screen for all the right reasons.

Goldsmith liked this score so much that you can actually hear him almost singing (or humming really loud) over one of the tracks.

I love this score too, and I only recall seeing positive comments from others about it. It's one of his most heartfelt and accessible works, and I think it's a gateway Goldsmith score for many. The DVD of the film had a complete isolated score track but I really hope Varese gives us a Deluxe Edition in uncompressed sound, with any alternates they can include.

Don't know who you've been talking to, but it's pretty well regarded on this message board.

Rudy is outstanding. I know the score way better than the movie (I liked the movie) so I don't know if anything is left to be expanded. But the CD is terrific.

There's a decent amount left to be expanded, though as I noted in my post above it's all available (unless there were any alternates or unused cues) on the DVD's isolated score track, which many people have ripped for personal use. The only problem is that DVD-video discs use compressed audio so it's worse than CD quality. Hence the need for Varese to issue a Deluxe Edition.

There's maybe one pretty good cue ("The Letter" is the one that comes to mind) that wasn't on the Varese, but otherwise, the album was a solid representation of the score.

I have the DVD with the complete score, and it's all good (and the missing cues do flesh things out a bit more, certainly not detracting) but I'll admit that for the most part it's just more of the same compared with the original album. This was a rare (in the 90s in particular) case of Goldsmith's album assembly being a very good representation of the score as a whole.

I don't know about "negative" comments necessarily, but I've definitely seen folks hedge their bets in a way because it's not Classic Goldsmith in the way that it's from his 90's period and it's relatively broad and uncomplicated. It's a heart-on-its-sleeve kind of score. It's also an incredible film score. Not only gorgeous and warm, but imbued with Goldsmith's gifts as a dramatist. It fits the movie perfectly, perfectly modulating every emotion, and manages to expertly walk a fine line between saccharine and sincerity. The movie does the same, and the score is a biggest reason for it. One of my top five favorite scores.

I agree that the album is fantastic, though there are a few cues I'd gladly double dip for:

The Letter (Shaun mentioned)
The film's main title
The second "waiting montage" piece which has a love minor key variation on the main theme

I don't know about "negative" comments necessarily ... etc.

Put this down to my age! My apologies to those who do think this is a great JG score. I've collected approx. 150 (or parts of) JG scores but Rudy was not one I ever sought and I'm convinced that I've seen comments about it being tedious et al ... perhaps it was just one comment I read in some distant thread ...

Given my favourite JG scores are his more melodic, as opposed to action-orientated, ones then this score is right up my street. Hence I shall look to add it to my collection.

Being highly selective I should point out out, however:
Aug 27, 2015: RUDY?!?! Really? What a dud to put out on vinyl [MCurry29] - Goldsmith's Rudy to be released on vinyl Oct. 19

Aug 25, 2012: RUDY is sweet but derivative and repetitive. [Vermithrax Pejorative] - Rudy or Hoosiers - which one would you pick?

Aug 25, 2012: Rudy seems a bit hackneyed by comparison [James MacMillan] - Rudy or Hoosiers - which one would you pick?

Mar 17, 2012: Of the remaining approximately 86 Goldsmith scores I own, it's hard to say which one is the least played, but I would definitely say the Flint scores, The Illustrated Man, Rudy, Rent-A-Cop, Not Without My Daughter, Mephisto Waltz, City Hall...scores I know I like and will definitely revisit at some time, but they're definitely at the bottom of my pile when I'm in a Goldsmith mood. [DeputyRiley] - Which GOLDSMITH is played the least at your home?

Nov 19, 2011: "Powder (Jerry Goldsmith - mysteriously, this is a favorite of many JG fans"

Including Jerry himself!

Yeah? Let's not forget he also considered RUDY one of his finest scores. wink [goldsmith-rulez] - 5 best scores from 1995

Dishonorable mentions:
RUDY (Jerry Goldsmith) - Jerry at his kitischiest. [goldsmith-rulez] - 5 best scores from 1993

Perhaps not universally loved ...

Rudy is a big favourite Goldsmith score with me. I'd gladly purchase an expanded edition, in fact I have been hoping for many years now that one will be released. Fingers still crossed!

This is my favorite Goldsmith. And I will pay for a Deluxe Edition if there was one. How can anyone not get goosebumps listening to Tryouts?
