...a pretty neat 'homage' to Herrmann I'd say!
And I know others have said as much - but, I just tonight caught up with the film. Enjoyed it much more than anticipated. But it was ALAN SILVESTRI's score that meshed perfectly (again) with Zemeckis' visuals.
Not since John Williams beautifully echoed Herrmann for DePalma on THE FURY have I tripped out on Herrmannesqueness.
Now - where the hell is the COMPLETE score for PREDATOR?!?

Hey Sjong, try Napster, I downloaded 34
tracks, and I think that's pretty much the
complete score, unless someone begs to
differ.

What Lies Beneath is the ONLY score I know that has working "shock effects", which make me jump in the air when I hear them. http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/wink.gif">

It works very well in the film, and the film works very well, too, despite the plot which doesn't seem to know which direction to go (mystery? horror? thriller? horror? mystery?)

GIJoe: Every time I've gone to Napster, all I see are the same "legit" tracks posted for download. Could you tell me where and how you found the extras? i LOVE this score...own the Varese release and would LOVe to hear more. Email me if you could please. Thanks.

I really didn't enjoy all the shock "GONG"s every time something potentially scary happened. That personally ruined some of the movie. However the cue at the end where she runs out to the truck is awesome

Hm. For me, the score actually "made" a major part of the movie.

Interesting to read some of these 2001 comments. WHAT LIES BENEATH was on tv this week and I decided to watch it again; I remember I didn't like the first time I viewed it way back and I wanted to check out the score again as I remembered Silvestri did it (I don't own the score).

I liked it more than I did when I first saw it, mostly because of Michelle Pfeiffer's performance and some of the camera movements that lingers with people going in and out of frame. The score by Silvestri is good during the emotional scenes but I felt that it tended to go overboard during the actual scares, with Silvestri accenting something had just happened with an additional musical beat that felt dated and bordering parody. I get the Hitchcock odes but I feel Zemeckis' movie is a missed opportunity, especially in the final reel. The whole thing felt too close to Herrmann/Psycho/Hitchcock comfort for me, actually taking me away from an otherwise good thriller premise. I truly think the finale would have benefitted from a more stripped down approach. I did like the buildup it took to get there and the bath tub sequence felt like it could belong to a better thriller. I'll still check out the album by Silvestri as I think the music will play better on its own. Does the 30 minute Varese album contain all the highlights?
