From the standpoint of politics and policy, I think I agreed with three things Reagan did. Maybe four, tops. (Of course, one of those, his gradual warmup of relations with the Soviet Union, was a pretty big damn thing.) But he executed his office with grace and style, even as he pursued an agenda I almost entirely opposed, and he executed his final years -- with the help of his family -- with equal grace. Surely no one could possibly believe that the way Nancy Reagan has borne this burden, of watching her husband's long, slow, and sad demise, was anything but heroic.

Regardless of anything else, the relationship between "Ronnie" and "mommie" was a guidebook for marital devotion and fidelity. My respect and condolences to Nancy Reagan for all she did for her man and her country.

This is another reason why I support the legalization of barbiturates as an over-the-counter drug. Remember 50 years ago when everyone & his Uncle Floyd was overdosing on barbs? Well unfortunately, those days are gone forever. Because doctors have replaced barbs with non-lethal sedatives. And it's just a goddam shame. Because there's a lot of suffering people out there. A lot of cripples and terminally-ill people. And the easiest and most non-traumatic way to kill yourself is with an overdose of nembutal or seconal. Please don't mistake my tone for flippancy. I'm serious about this thing. The government and the American Medical Assocation are depriving us of barbs. Doctors are paranoid about lawsuits. And the rotten consequence is that people have to suffer what Reagan suffered. Either that, or they have to resort to a violent suicide method. If we lived in a sane society, barbiturates would be readily available to these victims.
