One of the reasons I like this soundtrack so much is that it seems more genuinely "folksy" than other similarly-themed films and scores, yet with a romantic, symphonic vibe to it.

Right now, I'm embarassed to say that I don't remember if it's Irish or Scottish, but the utilization of gaelic voices are inspired and captivating.

There are also quite a few cues that are more standard "suspense" and action music, which makes the album all the more varied and listenable (after all, some folk-inspired music MAY grate after a few hours, no matter how good it is).

A Scot Rob is and one of the few times Ebert and Siskel ever mentioned the music to a movie
they reviewed. My favorite Burwell.

I much preferred it to Horner's BRAVEHEART, which had a similar premise (brave Scots versus evil English) and was around at about the same time. The CD is very user friendly, too; it has index points within tracks. Useful when you haven't much time and want to locate a certain bit.

Absolutely Thor!

A wonderful score for a vastly underrated film. I still say the final sword fight between Tim Roth and Liam Neeson is the best ever filmed, but more importantly I prefer Burwell's score to Horner's similar Braveheart. It might even be Burwell's best... at least from those I've heard.

I particularly like some of the percussion work, and the love theme is quite nice as well. Amazingly, though the score is rife with a traditional, Scottish-sounding instruments -- it never seems to pander like other film scores for Scottish settings.

This score was the first soundtrack cd that i bought, the first of the now over 800 scores that i own.

It's a favorite of mine, for me it's the best score Burwell ever wrote, however in my opinion,Braveheart it's simply the most beautiful score i ever heard....

I agree. "Rob Roy" is a very underrated film, and has two incredible scenes -- the "bridge escape" (which is one of the most ingenious ways I've seen to both escape and wreak vengeance upon an enemy) and, of course, the final swordfight.

And, for my money, Tim Roth's "fop" ranks in the top 10 of the nastiest movie villains of all time; Liam Neeson's final "response" to him during the last swordfight is a moment worthy of cheering.

Fine score, Thor. I hope to see Burwell compose more melodic scores like this one.

Agree with everyone here... one of the most exciting musical moments in the film has to be the opening shot where the thundering drums rise in the mix as Rob and his cohorts approach.

Great score. I wish Burwell would get more 'big' films like this, he's such a great composer.

Rob Roy is a good score and my favourite Burwell but James Horner's music from Braveheart is by far my favourite out of the two and one of my all time favourite Horner scores.

I happen to like Bobby Jones: Stroke Of Genius as well. I know it quotes some of Braveheart but this score is probably the best one out of his latest scores IMHO (not including Troy as I have not heard it yet - seeing film tomorrow!!)

It is a mishmash of both -- much like Liam Neeson's performance!

I do like the film however (though I can do without the unnecessarily violent rape scene). But it is wonderfully acted, and makes use of some grand locations (unlike Braveheart, much of which was filmed in Ireland).

But I must say I am not crazy about Burwell's score. I felt it was not lush and romantic and swashbuckling enough. I appreciated its "folksy" angle, but thought it needed to be a little more bold and orchestral. I chalk it up to Burwell not being articulate enough in the latter.

I don't understand why Michael Caton-Jones hired Burwell when George Fenton had perviously given him a grand, heroic score for Memphis Belle, as well as being much more adept in blending world music with "old school" scoring styles. Oh well...

It's a lovely score and I enjoy every note of it. Plus, I'm a sucker for bagpipes. Burwell's use of the bagpipes and percussion in some of the action-oriented pieces are exciting and a great pleasure to listen to. I'm one of Burwell's biggest fans, and he doesn't get talked up nearly enough around here. smile

On the subject of this indeed great score, any fans simply MUST also add the scarce (but easy to pick up 2nd hand..) CD single from the movie by Celtic band Capercaillie.

It was based on the traditional song "Ailein Dunn" and the CD single was actually a stunning 4x track EP (ignore the 1 track reference on amazon below - it's incorrect) - there are 2x versions of Ailein Dunn (one direct from the movie) - and then two further atmospheric tracks from the band.

I can't recommend it highly enough!

(click Used and New. I checked amazon.com but sadly the item is not on that database).

WELL worth tracking down. As a final piece of trivia (my speciality ;-) ) Ailein Dunn was also used to great effect on the Game Soundtrack for: Tomb Raider: Legend. Incredible music, trust me..

John.

Edit: here's the sleeve for the single:

Peter, I just listened to this amazing score yesterday. It has become my favorite Burwell score along with Miller's Crossing and Storyville. Shout out to my friend Sean for introducing me to the Storyville score.
