Splendid melodies, Jones's trademark gigantic sound (but with quite a few gentle moments), vibrant and exciting. Anyone else really like this score? Out of his three TV movie CDs (other ones are Cleopatra and Gulliver's Travells) it's by far my fav, though one of the themes resembles one from De Meij's LOTR Symphony... Be warmed, Thor. It's quite long, 75 minutes. But there's very little drollness. Jones has a wonderful gift or scoring fantasy. The main theme of this score is one of his best, and the tracks are exceptionally lengthy and listenable. "May Angels Fly Thee Home" is one of Jones' most beautiful and bittersweet love themes. I *do* think there are some overly repetetive passages in this score, but the more magical cues are wondrous and otherworldly. If Varese had pruned out the dead wood and edited it down to about 45-50 minutes, it would have been a terrific album (like The Dark Crystal). As-is, I tend to only listen to the CD when I'm cleaning my room or something. The moniseries was ok, but the music is a great starting point for one's own fantasy daydreams. The quality I love best in some of Goldsmith is what i love here-- the daring to have some bitterweet tang to the proceedings. Jones's action stuff since Dark City all SOUNDS like the action stuff from Dark City, but the whole piece sounds like a sad, mystical symphony. It would make a good soundtrack to Jack Vance's DYING EARTH books, or Wolfe's BOOK OF THE NEW SUN, perhaps (well, Goldsmith's APES would do there...)    Posted:   Mar 18, 2004 - 4:27 AM     By:   metaphor123   (Member) This is my favourite Jones soundtrack. I do NOT think it is too long, at all. No soundtrack is ever too long. In fact, unless its the full score, its too short. I can always skip tracks I don't like. Having said that, I don't skip any. The main theme is fantastically majestic, and I think it edges out over Lee Holdridge's take on the Arthurian legend, the still-fantastic 'Mists of Avalon.'    Posted:   Jan 18, 2013 - 4:20 AM     By:   Diederik   (Member) This is a wonderfully magical score. It transports me to a magical fantasy realm like no other score I know, a place where magic, mystery, danger, adventure, love, sadness and grandness all have their place. Trevor Jones admirably succeeds in capturing all of these elements in his score. The only downside is that the album is just too long. The opening tracks/suites are great, but after the first three tracks it gets a bit hit and miss for me. Not all of the music is as interestingly composed as those first few tracks. Only one of two that made my jaw drop within the first few seconds of listening to it! Typically I hate long soundtracks...and you know Trevor Jones expressed that he thought it was too long too in his interview with Stage & Screen Online. But I think it works here, I can easily listen to it from start to finish. The themes are great, the action is epic! I think some of the suspense music associated with Mab could have been trimmed for the album. Like other fellows said, it has anything you can expect from the Arthurian Legend under the pencil of Mr Jones. Dark Crystal and Nate & Hayes were from '82 and '83, respectively, while Merlin was composed 15 years later in '98, so I don't know if I'd classify Merlin an early Jones score. I recall buying it in 2007 after watching the TV film (2 parts?) ... the music was the only thing that had kept my interest. But, on disc, apart from a few passages both my wife and I thought it was a bore. I'm sure it's one of those scores which will reward the dedicated listen but I doubt that either of us will choose it to play again anytime soon. I admit to being less than enthusiastic about Mr. Jones's scores - I own several and even The Dark Crystal is a long way down my list of favourite film scores. Of his scores I think I like Angel Heart the best - at holding my interest, at any rate ... my usual dislike of dialogue being challenged by its effect here in breaking the music up. Looking at my CD database, I see that Merlin was the last of my acquisitions of his scores.
