I have the Citadel LP recording made from the original acetate discs in the Republic Pictures Music Archives at Brigham Young University. The LP does not have cue breakdowns but instrumental selections on both sides bookended with the vocal by Peggy Lee.

Does anyone know the names of the cue breakdowns? Who owns the recording and publishing rights to all the Republic Pictures scores?

Since Citadel Records is a division of Varese Sarabande, can they release any more of the music on cds?

Thanks for any help on this.

Hope this helps.

1. Main Title 1:29
2. Johnny Guitar 2:03
3. Orchestral Suite - Part 1 3:33
4. Guitar Solo 0:46
5. Orchestral Suite - Part 2 43:59
6. End Title: Johnny Guitar 1:05

Music composed and conducted by Victor Young.

On 2 and 6: Peggy Lee lyrics and vocal.

Can't resist quoting Leonard Maltin:
"The screen's great kinky Western, a memorable confrontation between saloonkeeper Crawford and righteous hellion McCambridge, who wants her run out of town and/or hanged. Simply fascinating with symbolism rampant throughout."
(Like maybe Crawford and McCambridge were both wearing jock straps??) eek

Thanks, but I wish the orchestral suites on sides one and two were broken down even further, and who played the guitar solos?

A fine Victor Young score. The Varese CD sounds a LOT better than the LP. I also enjoy the Varese CD to Young's Rio Grande. We need more Victor Young CDs !!!!!

Ten years later (!), here are track titles for the unidentified cues. They aren't "official" titles but rather, appropriate titles I gave them myself after checking the film closely and identifying all the pieces and the prime action they accompany:

03 HOLDUP AND AFTERMATH 3:33
04 CAN YOU PLAY? 0:46
05 PUT HIM ON HIS HORSE 0:28
06 VIENNA’S PROPOSITION 5:54
07 THE WATERFALL 1:31
08 VIENNA AND JOHNNY 5:10
09 BUGGY RIDE TO TOWN 1:31
10 THE BANK ROBBERY 3:13
11 THE POSSE 3:57
12 WHERE’S TURKEY? 3:12
13 THE PIANO 2:29
14 THE LYNCHING 4:35
15 ESCAPE 1:43
16 NIGHT OF FLAMES 2:05
17 TO THE LAIR 2:09

Thanks for the cues Basil. I always enjoyed the film and score.

You will note ten years ago I said "we need more Victor Young cds!"

Well, we did get a few more, and Kritzerland has at least 4 planned for 2014! smile

I hope one of them can be a better-sounding "Johnny Guitar", without the acetate crackles.
Great little score, and one that particularly benefits from having been seen/heard in the film itself before listening to the CD.

I agree Basil. I would guess the only Johnny Guitar music available is the acetate discs.

Yes, it's a score that having seen the film first does indeed help.

I first saw the film nearly 50 years ago and liked it right away. I convinced a friend to watch it about a year ago. After 20 minutes or so he shut it off, didn't like it. It's not a film for everyone.

I bought the LP when it came out about 1980, later got the cd. A good companion cd to Johnny Guitar is Rio Grande.

I like Victor Young! smile

I hope Bruce Kimmel of Kritzerland reads this post because he may be interested in giving this a proper remaster release>

I would love a re-release or a new remaster or whatever it could be. I was way too young to buy the CD.
