Man, is the board slow as molasses or what? Could it be Horner's death and increased traffic?
Anyways, I'm ressurecting this 12-year-old thread because I need your help.
I want to do a show on film music and montage sequences over the weekend, and I want your recommendations. I've scoured all the 'montage' threads on this board for help (there have been several), but I have some parameters that need to be in place:
* Should be around 3 minutes (slightly less or more is OK) * Classics are OK, but I'm also looking for less known montage tracks * No need to suggest any Elfman or Williams. I have those covered. * Needs to be a MONTAGE, edited to compress time with much of the sound effects weeded out, not just a "realtime" action sequence
For compression of time, I would suggest several montage scenes from TERMS OF ENDEARMENT scored by Michael Gore.
We see the relationship developments between Nicholson and MacLaine over time while watching the daughter and not-so-great-loser son-in-law required to move to various college towns. Time is compressed during these moves, and Gore's wonderful score backs the scenes of these time compressions as well as moving the scenes forward.
Have some real fun with this. Use "Building a Barn" from Chicken Run with music by Powell. Great music, great time compression montage and great fun. I think you could also find some amazing "dragon training" montages from How To Train Your Dragon movies backed by wonderful music.
Thor, I'm not sure how well this fits your parameters, but in THE YAKUZA there are two "semi-montage" scenes. I put that in inverted commas because I haven't seen the film for ages and can't exactly remember what Grusin's score accompanies.
But on the FSM CD, Track 5 is "20 Year Montage". It runs in at 3:26 and the liner notes explain that it underscores the characters talking about the convoluted relationship over that period of time. Sounds like it might be dialogue heavy.
Track 6 is "Scrapbook Montage/ Scrapbook Epilogue", which is only 2:10 long, but is virtually dialogue-free. Might not be what you're looking for because I think it's a "montage" only in the sense that they're looking at old photos in an album.
YouTube might be your friend here, and you might be able to access the liner notes on-line. Haven't tried.
Just thought that your request was looking a bit lonely.
Waxman's building of the Spirit in "Spirit of St. Louis." Tiomkin's building the pyramid in "Land of the Pharaohs." North's gladiator training montage in "Spartacus." And not to exclude Herrmann, there were a few montages in "Citizen Kane" that were largely silent with only musical accompaniment.
Waxman's building of the Spirit in "Spirit of St. Louis."
People keep mentioning that. Waxman is my favourite Golden Age composer by far, and at some point I owned a CD-R of this. Unfortunately, I don't anymore, and I can't remember what it sounded like. And I don't have anything from it in my library, nor could I find it anywhere online, for sampling.
