By all means pick it up, it's a great score. It didn't really satisfy me the first time I listened to it, either. Luckily I don't let my first listens determine whether I'll listen to something again, because if I did, most of my Herrmann discs would have been tossed after only a single play... I swear I've heard that 'theme' that's in "I Can't Sleep" and "$20 Bill" somewhere else. I thought it was the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" for some reason, but that's not it... It is certainly a score of Herrmann's that needs to be listened to again and again to realy appreciate it. FYI, the Arista expanded release contains 18 tracks. Historically, if you are a fan of Herrmann's work, this is an important score to have as Herrmann died only hours after finishing the last recordings for TAXI DRIVER. Historically, if you are a fan of Herrmann's work, this is an important score to have as Herrmann died only hours after finishing the last recordings for TAXI DRIVER. Don't quite see how that constitutes importance, per se... Well, as I recall from A Heart At Fire's Center, Herrmann was seriously ill at the time, but refused to go home to complete the score on another session date. He stayed and finished conducting the score that night, so the Taxi Driver recording stands as a testament to his dedication to his craft. The film is thus dedicated to Herrmann's memory.
