Now that Warner Home Video has issued a splendid collector's edition of GIANT on DVD, what is the possibility of the entire score being remasted and issued on CD? I have read in the book contained with the GIANT collector's VHS set that over 11 hours of stereo music sessions are in the Warner's vault. A volume 2 CD was to be issued, but never appeared. I would love a 2 cd set of the entire score, but would settle for a volume 2. What is the hold up? Can Capitol's original soundtrack LP rights be causing a problem? Anyone know?

What would be the precedent?

Has an expanded score rerelease ever been prompted specifically by a video or DVD release? (Not just a rerelease of the original album, but an EXPANDED one!) Which title(s)? "Close Enounters," maybe? Any others?

Which companies would be involved? Would it be Turner? Rhino? FSM? Does Warner's own record company ever do expanded rereleases?

The booklet is wrong. Warners only kept mono tracks. Some tracks have appeared through private sources.
One track that has not shown up is an alternate Main Title. Instead of the chorus junning above the orchestra, the chorus SINGS lyrics to the Giant theme.

Quote from the the vhs Giant book: "The soundtrack producer, Nick Redman, who has restored scores for THE ROBE, THE WILD BUNCH and THE STAR WARS trilogy, produced an entirely new 73 minute cd from 11 1/2 hours of usable, original material from Dimitri Tiomkin's scoring sessions. The CD includes some previously unused cues as well as vocal renditions of the songs Tiomkin and Paul Francis Webster wrote for the film, but were not used in the picture."

Sorry about my reference to stereo, aparently no stereo material exists as it was erased decades ago. George Stevens prepared a mono mix for the final film.

Soooo...this means a 73-minute CD of GIANT is forthcoming? More info, please. We Tiomkinites need to know!

I've heard that CD was done several years ago and never released.
Stevens did a sTEREO mix for the final film. Warnes did not keep these tracks. Acouple of stereo prints exists with a couple of collectors. In fact, one of them was brought in to show warners execs about ten years ago.

I may be wrong, But I thought "Cleopatra" had been just such a case. The complete score on two CD's released a few months before the restored 3 disc DVD.
Can anyone back me up on this?

You are right on target. The Varese double CD expanded score release of CLEOPATRA was a by-product of the restoration of the film (and its soundtrack) for release on DVD, and more than likely would never have happened otherwise.

Interesting.

Not so much. From the great Hallmark label. This release has the same tracks as (and is no doubt sourced from) the Capitol records LP/CD, which is now in the public domain in Europe. Back in 1994, Tsunami issued the same Capitol recording under the even more liberal European laws of that time.

The old Capitol CD is long out of print. DRG licensed the recording and re-issued it in 2006, but even that version is deleted from their catalog. So here's a chance for those who don't have it to pick up a copy (literally).

Here it is for £2.21 in the UK - less than a pint.

The Hallmark CD seems to contain the same content as the DRG release.

The original Capitol LP, which is the DRG CD, is a Tiomkin conducted re-recording of the film's music.

Any release with music from the film would be very nice for sure. An example of unreleased music would include the famous Jett Rink theme as he is initially "walking off the fence" at little Reatta.

This movie badly needs the Blu ray treatment! Excellent score, it be wonderful to have a new recording of this score with great sonics.

It has been said the capitol LP is a rerecording - it is not. It is the actual tracks from the film.

Sorry Joe Caps, you are correct. There is no information within the CD that says its a re-recording - it just says "Music from the Sound Track." There are some pics of Maestro Tiomkin on the soundstage at Warner Bros.

I need to listen more closely, recognizing that everything in the movie may not be on the CD, and vice-versa; this was my errant assumption. Thanks Joe Caps.
