I'm curious what the provenance is of these recordings.

I'm curious what the provenance is of these recordings.

All interested soundtrack collectors could buy these audio cassettes in former times (till about 2003) without any problem from the Steiner library till WB then put an end to this website:
http://web.archive.org/web/20020925131817/maxsteinerhomepage.tripod.com/library.htm

So that´s the provenance of these audio cassettes.

These are all copies of the Steiner Library tapes.

Part of the appeal of the auction is the claim that everything was owned by Max:

Max Steiner Personally Owned Collection Of Recordings. With over 300 film scores and 24 Oscar nominations (including three wins) to his credit, Max Steiner is counted among the ranks of film's greatest composers and conductors. Offered here is an impressive collection of Max Steiner's personal recordings of his work in film, including over 50 cassette tapes, and five soundtrack LPs. Recordings cover films like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, The Searchers, Lost Horizon, Sergeant York, King Kong, and many others. Condition of items varies, with differing degrees of wear throughout.

And despite all the naysayers here, LeRoy Holmes' KING KONG album is proudly displayed (yeah, I know it's mainly for the artwork, but still wink ).

The description says "personally owned," which implies that they were Steiner's, and not tape copies from the Steiner Society. Weren't Steiner's personal copies mostly acetates discs?

Yeah, "a tape of his" is one thing, while a tape of his tape is something else. But I'm willing to believe they are selling off his personal copies.

At some point, I'll bet Steiner would have made tapes of his acetates.

I would take anything Heritage Auctions says in their descriptions with an extra large container of salt. I have had to correct so much misinformation over the years - they're good about adding my corrections when I find them, but they are the WORST in terms of just believing what they're told, no matter how untrue it may be.

That is a bogus claim. Max's entire collection was put on deposit at BYU. He would not have had cassettes of the Steiner Library material. If he had anything from the Library it would have been high speed reel-to-reel copies. But neither were in the collection donated by Lee Steiner. Also, don't be misled by the cassette labeled "BRIDE CAME C.O.D." There was only one surviving cue from that score. The cassette is most likely a collection of pieces as compiled by Jim Reising. Or it is one of the complete filmtrack recordings that Jim offered. Same goes for the "HELL ON FRISCO BAY" cassette. The whole thing is very strange.
