The jazzy score was by Paul Misraki. I see that he scored some other Melville films, including "Alphaville," which I have not seen in ages. First, Alphaville is a film directed by Jean-Luc Godard. 5 cues from Alphaville appeared within a series of volumes of discs on Misraki film music. Becker, Buñuel, Chabrol, Clouzot, Godard, Melville, Renoir, Vadim & Welles! Which other composers have had these directors on their résumés? Musically, though, Misraki is firmly in the French Romantic tradition. The majority of his film music oeuvre is pre-Nouvelle Vague conservatism. Misraki is very much in the 'Golden Age' mo(u)ld. Had no idea that things like Le Doulos were available on Amazon Prime - I'm gonna give that a watch soon. And it looks like quite a lot of Misraki's music - including the five tracks Zardoz mentions above from Alphaville - are on Spotify.
