My top 10 scores of the actual year can now be found here:

http://celluloidtunes.no/celluloid-tunes-59-the-10-best-scores-of-2018-20th-international-edition/

Still working on what my favourite archival releases are (but it should go without saying that you'll find no expanded releases among them).

There were soundtracks this year?

Kidding aside, I haven't heard anything that interested me since Hateful Eight. I know...sorry, folks.

I know you're mostly into older Golden Age scores and stuff (which I applaud!), but I think you'd be rewarded if you'd look at some of the fine, new scores being released -- especially outside Hollywood. But it obviously requires some effort and prioritization on your end.

Ditto! My list is 25 scores of 2018 Films and that was a bitch to edit down. It really goes to show a lack of effort and no real desire to look across the Oceans outside of America. Although, I can easily rattle off 15 American film scores that are pretty sweet.
Hateful Eight? That IS telling and sorry. But, I understand you had a bad year. Look to Spain!!!!!!

List coming this weekend.

Thor, I'll honestly give a try (or retry) anything you recommend me.

That's great to know. I'll try to weed out the electronic or pop/rock/indie-infused scores in favour of the orchestral (symphony, chamber etc.) that I think you may prefer. I have a few of those in my 'best of' program (MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS, MARY SHELLEY, THE NUTCRACKER, PAPILLON) linked to above, but this year was particularly heavy on the alternative/electronic.

As I'm still working on my IFMCA nominations, I'll have a fuller list in a week or so. smile

One of my girl friends saw Mary Queen of Scots and really liked it. I haven't heard the score yet, so that will be first, thanks!

It's possible I spoke too soon re: 2018. I just adore my golden and silver age scores SO much, and spend most of my listening time with that or concert music in general (Mahler, Beethoven, R. Strauss and you-know-who).

It's Richter, so you can't go wrong! Providing you like post-minimalist romanticism, and aren't ALL about the romantics! smile

Regarding my choices. This list is compiled from the CD’s and Vinyl Albums I purchased and have determined to be my favorites for 2018. My scope is obviously limited purely due to mathematics. I do buy a lot of film scores new and old. I will be posting a separate 2018 favorite list of all "other" film scores released during the year.

Obviously, I have deep attachment to his music and a personal bias for Johann Johannsson.
His passing has affected me deeply as his music has had a profound effect on my life’s musical journey is such a short period of time. I first became acquainted with JJ by his association with Marc Almond. In 2001 JJ wrote, played, arranged the music for and Produced Marc’s brilliant album ‘Stranger Things’ which included the classic song “Glorious”. One of Marc’s career best albums. I re-discovered JJ in 2013 with his score for ‘Prisoners’ while watching the film and ultimately reading the credits. Brilliant follow-up scores came in quick succession and the new discovery of his past “non-film” has music left me feeling so full, but selfishly wanting much more music from the great Johann Johannsson. R.I.P.

‘Mary Magdalene’ is so deep and soulful it hits me in my heart. I just love ‘The Goats’ at top volume! The last 4 tracks are just so pure and beautiful to these ears. By far my most listened to score this year. ‘Mandy’ is just brilliant! There’s no other way to put it. An absolute career capping mic drop! ‘Mercy’ and its EPIC ‘Main Title’ plus portions of the brilliant ‘ORPHEE’. So that alone makes it my 3rd most loved score of the year.

Unfortunately, though I own I will not be including new Diego Navarro-El Fotografo de Mauthausen, Marco Beltrami- Le Empereur de Paris’ and Theodore Shapiro’s score for Destroyer since film not “actually” released in US until January 2019. These three scores will more than likely be at or near the top of my 2019 Favorites!

Guess I kilt this thread. Come on guys and gurls. Everyone loves lists-right? What about you folks who love the franchises, action scores-filled with "action" cues, blockbusters-animation-Pixar-superhero scores? It is curious to see the lack of posts for quite a fruitful year as 2018. Adam K, Yavar, Justin B, Shaun R. , Schiffy, DMD, Solium, Joan, MD, Zardoz, LOKUTUS. Bring it.

I think the only 2018 releases I bought were SMALL SOLDIERS and MASQUERADE, neither of which I've opened yet, though there are a few I do want to acquire (DRACULA, PETER PROUD, MURDER BY DEATH). I certainly didn't buy any new scores, though I'll probably pick up SOLO at some point.
