... of Bear McCreary's music. What would YOU recommend to be the first piece of music of his that I can listen to on youtube that will knock my socks off?
My first Bear McCreary soundtrack was Wrong Turn 2. However I find it mediocre BECAUSE my second Bear McCreary soundtrack purchase was the 3-CD set of his music to the television series Human Target. That one is fantastic, I really love that score so if you like that music then you will find most other scores by him totally of your taste.
Check out the first volumes of OUTLANDER and DA VINCI'S DEMONS! That's a greater way into his more lyrical side than the BATTLESTAR: GALACTICA stuff or other genre fare.
When I met Richard Hatch a few years ago, we talked briefly about Battlestar Galactica music and he thought Bear McReary's music Galactica theme was greater than Stu Phillips'.
Someone mentioned Prelude to War, which is my favorite Mcreary piece. In more recent times I just can't get enough of Hazmat Suit from 10 Cloverfield Lane. I think it must be the use of the blaster beam:
Mmmh...pretty generic all of the soundbites. It`s always staccato rythm...eerie choirs etc. Something I guess ( might sound cocky ) every first semester in music can compose.
Its amazing how those guys are seperated from composers like WILLIAMS ( Who also has some generic shortcuts in his later STAR WARS Scores..but thats due to the repetitive nature of scoring 9 parts )and all the silver and golden agers.
