The subject of sales comes up here from time to time so it's really interesting to see Jon Burlingame write a piece in Variety listing Varese's top 10 best selling score albums.

It's a really interesting list with some predictable entries (GHOST at #1) and, to me, several surprises (T2 up at #2).

Well, I hope that means they'll seriously consider deluxe editions of "Rudy" and "Father of the Bride".

That was a surprise for me, too.

Seeing Last of the Mohicans up there isn't a surprise, though, seeing as how the OST album went platinum, if I remember correctly.

Yup, nor STAR WARS, which will find a foothold in the market in any form because it's STAR WARS.

I was especially surprised to see FATHER OF THE BRIDE up there just because it's a comedy and those aren't traditionally huge sellers. I guess now we know how Silvestri afforded that palatial estate AMIRITE.

Reported to Thor.

Do you seriously think they've never considered "Rudy"?

(As for "Father of the Bride," I have absolutely no memory of how much more music is in that movie. I would also bet that that one sold to a more general audience, which maybe isn't the same crowd that goes for limited edition expanded CDs.)

Anyway, these sales reports are news to us, not them.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I wonder how the rerecording of MOHICANS sold in comparison to the very popular original release (and how many erroneously bought the rerecording, believing it to be the original).

I've always wondered if strong sales of the original album actually hampered the prospect of getting a deluxe edition. Why strangle a golden goose?

I always thought it was Milan who released Ghostconfused

They both did. Varese released it first, in 1990.

To be perfectly clear, Varese actually turned down Ghost and Milan got it - Varese then licensed it from Milan.

Amusing list, though. Most of it is correct. I should think Titanic: The Ultimate Collection should be on it as I know it outsold at least one of the titles on this list, but then again... smile

I still see the Ghost CD for sale in every thrift store I walk into.

This list doesn't surprise me at all. These are very popular films, songs and cult status soundtracks.

Well I'm one of them! Never saw the film but heard a track from the soundtrack and really liked it, so picked up the score not knowing it was a rerecording.

Is it any good? I have the OST, of course, which is a favourite (and one of the few 90s soundtracks that non-film music fans know and like), but I never checked out the rerecording. The Edelman material, in particular, seems difficult to replicate in a rerecording format.

Is Father even possible given that the original album doesn't even drag itself across the finish line of 30 minutes (and that's with source music)?

The rerecording is very good. It sounds different from the original, sure, but it's programmed in film order, so the Jones and Edelman music mix. It dumps quite a lot of the Edelman from the OST (there are only 3 Edelman cues on the rerecording). It also has the full version of Promontory, which the OST does not have, due to that weird fade out into the main theme towards the end of the track.

I like it but it helps if you think of it as a different animal altogether. IMO it brings the two sides closer to each other; a step back from the Jones material but a step up for Edelman. The Jones stuff is a little more detailed but loses the power and doesn't have that same wonderfully wet sound. By contrast, rather than replicating the Edelman sound the McNeely goes for fuller orchestration which adds some weight. It also resequences the OST in film order, and it works better than the original might have with the single orchestra. So, it's a familiar but much different listening experience.

I absolutely love the re-recording. I tried the OST years later and it frankly sounds so different it was a distraction. One of those cases where I like what I fell in love with first.
