Kritzerland is proud to present our final two CD releases for 2018 – two great soundtracks, both from the Golden Age - the first is (the second is in a separate thread):

A MAN CALLED PETER

Composed and Conducted by Alfred Newman

A Man Called Peter is the story of preacher Peter Marshall, who was the Chaplain of the United States senate as well as being pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. Based on the biography by his widow, Catherine Marshall, Henry Koster directed an excellent cast, including the fine British actor Richard Todd (Stage Fright, The Dam Busters, and The Hasty Heart, for which he received an Academy Award nomination as Best Actor), Jean Peters (Captain from Castile, Viva Zapata, Pickup on South Street, Broken Lance) as Catherine Wood Marshall, and also in the cast were Jill Esmond, Les Tremayne, and young Billy Chapin. And to write score, the head of the Fox music department, Alfred Newman, who’d worked with Koster on the religious epic, The Robe.

Alfred Newman’s score is a beauty. No other composer did this kind of film as well as Newman and he did many films with religious themes. It is emotional and passionate and filled with memorable music. You can always tell a Newman score within the first twenty seconds of hearing it – the extraordinary writing for strings, the harmonies and colors – he was simply unique and one of the greatest of all film composers, and his long and amazing career at Fox is really unparalleled. Add to that the brilliant work of his co-conspirators, orchestrator Edward B. Powell and vocal supervisor, the great Ken Darby, and you have film music magic.

The soundtrack for A Man Called Peter was previously released on CD by Film Score Monthly. The presentation there included all the source music presented within the score itself, as it appeared in the film. For this release, Mike Matessino decided to present Newman’s score by itself, and hearing it that way is extremely powerful and a great listening experience. All of the source music is included here, after the Newman program. The sound has been considerably cleaned up – a bit of wow and flutter still remains, but it’s minor now and the Newman score sounds fantastic in that classic Fox stereo.

A MAN CALLED PETER is limited to 1000 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping. CDs will ship by the third week of January, but never fear, we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date and we’re going to try our hardest to get them out by the end of the year. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Well I’d already reordered my FSM release in iTunes to present the score and then the source music, because I agree that it plays better that way. And I’ll certainly keep the FSM release for the detailed liner notes...but I am sorely tempted to pick this up for the improved sound (the Mattesino touch is not to be underestimated, and I don’t think he worked on the original FSM). I dearly hope that Prince of Foxes is next on Kritzerland’s list for TLC on the sound (and hopefully expansion, if more of the score can be rescued).

Major kudos Bruce, and keep up the fantastic Newman releases!

And hopefully while they’re at it, they can do something about Waxman’s Prince Valiant (if LLL isn’t already doing that), which could also use the Mattesino touch (plus, I’ve been sorely tempted by used copies of the FSM).

That would be terrific.

Source music is always a challenge on soundtrack records, and there is no universal solution. But I do recall being particularly distracted by a musically irrelevant snippet of a Brahms symphony in the midst of an Alfred Newman score. I'm sure the new decision is for the best here.

The FSM is excellent, but (like the fantastic Rhino edition of How the West Was Won) I too sometimes have to skip tracks. The Kritzerland idea is pure gold imo.

It's a beautiful Newman score, and of course the FSM release was a very long time ago smile

Wow, wow, wow, wow, WOW!!! This is by far the 4th quarter release I'm most excited about. I love this film and score and never was able to pick up the FSM - so glad I didn't now with improved sound (and cover)! Keep the Newman coming and great job, Bruce!!

Most Brilliant. Thanks a million Kritzerland, I was just about to purchase the FSM release after all these years, but now the wheel has turned and I will be ordering this gem for sure.

I have never seen this film but I love Newman and those samples are sublime! I still haven't ordered How Green Was My Valley and the Fuller at Fox CDs yet so my next Kritzerland order will be a Newman extravaganza.

Those are both really good, especially Valley, which is an outright classic imo.

Awesome score. Newman at his best !
Two of its themes were written and used in other films.
The theme for Washington DC was originally used for The Bluebird and then Young Mr. Lincoln.
The love theme was also written for The Bluebird, then became a major theme for This Above All,
then used with chorus in the finale of Leave Her to Heaven.
Then used as a love theme in O Henrys Full House.
The only one of these scores NOT available is This Above All. I hope we get it to complete this collection.

I LOVE Blue Bird, one of Alfred's most magical scores imo.

I dream of a day where there's a box set of rerecorded Alfred (though I recognize it as a dream, at least while I'm alive).

Newman's THIS ABOVE ALL is a beautiful score that I would love to see on CD if the elements still exist.
