...& Shazam! does look like crap. I don't know. The image of Captain Marvel blowing bubblegum reminds me of the sort of image that would appear on the cover of the DC 1970s Shazam comic book, preferably drawn by C.C Beck.

...& Shazam! does look like crap. I don't know. The image of Captain Marvel blowing bubblegum reminds me of the sort of image that would appear on the cover of the DC 1970s Shazam comic book, preferably drawn by C.C Beck. Absolutely. Yes, I got to know about the Captain Marvel serial from both an uncle who remembered it as a kid, and the old Warren Superheroes special magazine. Didn't get to see it until I finally bought the dvd MANY years later. While it's true that the serial makes it look like a traditional straight adventure, the comic strips it's based on clearly aren't. I too came to know the character from the DC published Shazam in the 70s (and still have the tabloid sized paperback special), many of which were reprints of the original Whizz comics. They had talking animals like the caterpillar Mr Mind and Tony the Talking Tiger! And who can forget dear old Uncle Marvel who had no powers but insisted on running around after the heroes? I'm also pretty sure I remember a DC original plot involving an attack by vegetables!! My favourites too were by C.C. Beck, but I also had a soft spot for Kurt Schaffenburger's work. So yeah, the strips were comedies too so it's not much of a stretch. And DC does need a jollier approach for a while that this 'pause for breath' might give them. Looks good to me. Now, am I right in thinking that the character is now called Shazam after the wizard, and not Captain Marvel? Because that IS a shame. I realise it would be confusing at the moment with the Marvel Studios film coming out soon too but still.. All that legal wrangling. So annoying.

Looks like Shazam is confused and is browsing Grinder for other confused guys. That's not what I want to think when I see a superhero.

Looks like Shazam is confused and is browsing Grinder for other confused guys. That's not what I want to think when I see a superhero. Must concede that there is that modern 'knowingness' about it all. But the kid's (Billy Batson) story seems reasonably serious, and the crippled kid is a nod (at least if not more when the damn thing actually comes out) to Captain Marvel Jr. And I remember that Captain Marvel's eyes were always drawn as if they wasn't anything between the upper and lower eyelids. Though Schaffenberger (I think it was) drew black dots in there. Forgive me, this is all from memory of those 70s Shazam DC comics.
