While at the Netflix site, I found a film I'd ignored when it first came out in 1971 at the time I think I ignored it because it was 'Disney'. At that time, I was enamoured with 'A Clockwork Orange', and 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday', and Disney seemed irrelevant to me. Now of course because of the times we live in, I'm seeking some Disney 'escapism'. 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' had several Oscar nominations to it's credit, and one win, for it's Special Visual Effects. The music was by The Sherman Brothers who got nominations for their score, and for a song in it. If you've seen the film, did you enjoy it, (as a child or as an adult), and memories as to it's music? I've always enjoyed Richard and Robert Sherman's film music, but this soundtrack is, (currently), priced VERY high.

One of my all time favorite scores/songs albums! I pray this gets the Disney red carpet treatment some day.

I was never able to get into this film. I love Mary Poppins but this one just felt like a let down. Both the film and the score. I'll have to watch it again with fresh eyes and ears and see if I change my mind.

I happen to really like this film (especially in the restored version, though Portobello Road does go on a tad too long there), even if it's not quite in the same league as Mary Poppins, and second the calls for an expanded version from either Intrada or Disney themselves, especially for that marvelous cue for when the museum comes to life to fight the Nazis.

For some reason, despite my folks taking me to 'the pictures' on many memorable occasions for a number of Disneys and favourite fantasy films of the time, three films were ignored for various bizarre reasons, but basically I think because they simply didn't appeal. They did to me, just not my folks. They were Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Mary Poppins I saw, along with many others but those three were simply ignored. "Too silly" and other excuses were used. So all three were actually seen very much later on tv as an adult.

But B&B does seem to be a thin attempt at repeating the success of Mary Poppins. Why they just didn't do more Poppins films is beyond me. I'd have thought the potential was there.

In the UK we did however have Disney Time on BBC 1 during most holiday seasons (Easter ad Christmas among them). A clips show presented by a celebrity in the days before home video, and when Disney re-released their flicks in the cinemas on regular occasions. It used to show the football game from B&B quite a lot. I even had the view-master reels bought as a present!

From what I’ve read, P. L. Travers was none too pleased with what the studio did with Mary Poppins and refused to let them film any of the sequel books, hence Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Walt actually had this planned as a backup film in case he couldn’t get the rights to Mary Poppins).

I've read somewhere besides here that there are two versions of this film. I'm getting the Blu-ray from Netflix that's 2hr. 19 mins. (I believe this may be the 'restored version'?) In any event, I've never seen it, so it's bound to be an experience of some sort.

Probably a porn knock-off. That's what the title always suggested to me. wink

Yes, the 2hr. 19min version is the restored version while the current Blu-ray is the shorter theatrical version which runs just under two hours.

Yes, BEDKNOBS was victim of some last minute cutting, mostly during musical sequences. Some of the soundtrack album selections did not make it to the final cut. Last I heard it was partially restored. However, Only audio was available for one sequence. Not sure if this situation has changed.

It is a lovely, plangent, film musical with many overtones of odd melancholy. I enjoy it a bit more every time I watch it.

NOTE: The extended version has never been released to Blu-Ray – so Mr. Montana, if you are indeed getting a Blu-Ray from Netflix, it will be 117 minutes, or 1 hr. 57 minutes. This is NOT the extended, “roadshow”, version that has to date only been released on regular DVD. The extended “roadshow” version is approximately 24 minutes longer – clocking in at about 139 minutes. But again, the 139 minute version is not available on Blu-Ray.

Disney, for some odd reason, seems to be suppressing the extended version – there is a thread at the Home Theatre Forum devoted entirely to the film, its versions, and its releases:

https://www.hometheaterforum.com/community/threads/bedknobs-and-broomsticks-blu-ray-review.333350/

It is truly odd that Disney seems reluctant to release the “roadshow” version to Blu-Ray.

Fond memories of this film - I think I saw it for my birthday when it first came out. An energetic turn from Bruce Forsyth and some undersea football cartoon antics. My favourite part was the battle at the end with the animated suits of armour.as far as I recall.

I have seen it since - watched it with the kids when they were quite young. Had to bite my tongue when the immortal line was uttered. Oh, you know the one.

Hi John, hey..I totally believe you. I've no reason not to, I'm not an expert, hell, I haven't even SEEN the friggin movie yet. All I can tell you is what's listed at the Netflix site. (Are you in a foreign country and have different Netflix?). Netflix tells me (according to my queue information), that the Blu-ray was mailed to me today, meaning I should get it the beginning of next week. If you go to Netflix, type in the film title, you'll see that their are TWO versions listed, (depending on your Netflix plan), Blu-ray AND DVD. Next to that is the running time. Who knows, maybe Netflix made a mistake in their tech specifics, maybe Netflix is privey to some sort of...special privelages from the studios which aren't available to purchase by us common-folk? Who knows?

I'm posting a link to the clip of the Special Visual Effects team who won their Oscar for 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks'. What is really, really the best thing about this clip is not the presenters nor the winners, particularly. It's Actress, Helen Hayes who announces the presenters. Watch her reaction (and the audiences reactions) when she announces the name of the 'upcoming film of Karen Black'. You have to know your Phillip Roth, to understand!

There is indeed a nice dark tone to some of this film. Quite refreshing in some ways. Would definitely like to see the full version.

But my biggest surprise watching on tv one Christmas was seeing Bruce Forsyth in this! We UK types know only too well who this well loved British entertainer was. For me the earliest memory will be Sunday Night at the London Palladium in the 60s , followed by Bruce Forsyth's Generation Game in the 70s, Play Your Cards Right and God knows how many more things, the last of course being Strictly Come Dancing, which is still the biggest UK ratings winner.

I'd like to know if ANY of our colonial cousins actually have any idea who this national treasure is.

Answers on a postcard please.... (old fashioned quiz show ploy and announcement in the UK)....

I think my response was a bit snooty -- to be fair there are lots of folks who probably like the 117 minute version better than the 139 minute version! And I am certainly not an expert on the film -- which I missed when I was younger and only caught up with after the advent of laser discs. I will have to dig out my old 25th Anniversary LD -- which I think is the extended version too. I've always liked the look and "feel" of the film.

Bruce Forsyth is one of those persons I recognize in photos -- but had no inkling of his vast popularity in Great Britain. I've been watching quite a lot of "QI" -- the TV show hosted for many years by Stephen Fry (with lots and lots of index cards!) -- and now Sandy Toksvig. There are many folks on that show with whom I am becoming acquainted -- and who were totally unknown to me. For example, Rob Bryden, and even the American Rich Hall who seems to be huge in the UK but almost unknown in his "home" country -- well, at least unknown to me.

Curious about how you will react to the film!

Obviously, since I haven't seen the film yet, I'll be really expecting something...staggeringly brilliant when I hear it. Oh, I know, I know Chris...the children in the film have a dog and it's named Brexit. Here Brexit, here boy!

I remember a documentary years ago on UKtv that followed Forsyth on his quest to the US to find an audience there. It didn't happen. There's a possibility he was slightly out of his time. He wasn't an actor as such usually, but a song and dance man who achieved most fame from game shows within which he was quite entertaining. I guess it was difficult to find him a place where US audiences could witness his talents that grew on folks over years here.

Rich Hall is an interesting example of someone who goes elsewhere to find the opposite. You've probably seen the Canadian woman who seems popular over here, I'm sure she's been on QI, where I get the impression she's done the same as Hall. Sorry I can't remember her name! Think she's basically a comedian, but we get a lot of folks who seem to do the rounds on quiz shows these days before branching out into other stuff.

I was going to say the same about Disney favourite David Tomlinson, that I know him more from US films than British, but Googling him I see he simply did more before my time. Interesting that he did Carry On Admiral, in that it ISN'T part of the famous British comedy film franchise. Even funnier that he plays a character called Tom Baker! Well, it is for anyone who is remotely a Doctor Who fan...

It’s not “Mary Poppins” but, it is a valiant effort and great fun on many levels. Irwin Kostal did a wonderful job with the music and the Overture is glorious. My favourite number is “The Beautiful Briney”.

Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson are excellent, as are the kids. Any problems lie with the script and the editing. But, Hey!....just enjoy what we have.

The problem with the restoration is that they lost the audio for some sequences and the re-recordings are badly dubbed. Take a look at this sequence. The voices are clearly not those of David Tomlinson and Ian Weighill.... and Tessie O’Shea, bless her,,,, a lady who was as Welsh as a cart load of leeks & daffodils suddenly acquires a broad Scottish accent. (Had the dubbers no ear? Tch! )

https://youtu.be/-MqX8dtnQiQ

Bruce Forsythe also appeared in “Star!”, as Julie Andrew’s father and in “Heironymous Merkin...” a real mess of a movie but, he does get a great number in it....”On the Boards”.

Even better than that, Dave. I tried to post a GIF of it but couldn't. Maybe some kind soul will.... or maybe they should just leave it for you to discover it by yourself!
