Norway..NO. Austria..NO. Switzerland..NO. With all the expense that goes overbudget and the corruption, there's no love for the games. Except maybe Calgary, Alberta. This is the city I was going to move to instead of Montana, it's just north of me and I love it there. Calgary has said 'yes', with caveats. Do most people still care for The Winter Olympics, or are these games doomed to slow extinction?

Having grown up in Colorado, I'm more interested in the Winter Games than the Summer ones.

With regard to the venues, I think the IOC should choose permanent sites for both the Winter and Summer Games. It's such a waste to move them around the world and causing financial difficulties for the host countries. Maintenance and improvements to the permanent sites could be financed by dues paid by countries that send teams to compete.

Some have suggested Athens as a permanent Summer Games site in keeping with its historical connection to the Olympics. Canada or a Scandinavian country would be appropriate for the Winter Games.

P.S. There is some precedence for this idea. Denver won the right to host the 1976 Winter Games, but there was strong opposition from many Coloradans. A referendum was held to decide the issue and voters rejected the Games. It was too late for another city to develop a new alternate venue, so the IOC convinced Innsbruck, Austria to be the host, using facilities that had been built for the 1964 Winter Games. They were a success. Needless to say, Denver will probably never be considered again!

The Olympics seems mostly a financial devastation to whatever city they use in the long term.

It is hard to see what anyone would want them anymore. It also seems like viewers do not really care as much as they one did, not sure why. Have they been effectively replaced by video games? Not sure

The winter Olympics is probably the biggest sporting event in the world for most Norwegians -- and some select countries in Europe. As it happens, the US is also a big player, almost always fighting for the overall top medal spot, across a variety of different events (so I'm surprised it isn't more popular over there).

Of course, Calgary has hosted the winter Olympics before, so I'm sure they could do it again.

My uncle was in the Calgary '88 Winter Olympics. So i loved it for a long time, but my interest in it and the summer olympics has waned to almost nothing over the years. The moguls event makes my knees hurt just looking at it. Not surprised no one wants it with the financial straits you are put under.

Oh, where i live in Canada they do seem to all watch it on the telly when it's on. the last few anyway.

You obviously didn't pay attention to the London Olympics which were a huge success and which created a lasting legacy with the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the massive regeneration in the area.

I cannot speak to the London Games specifically. But there are ample studies that show that the games are one of the worst things you can do to a city.

some of the better ones;

No way, I don't care how much they offer, NOT in my backyard!
