I first noticed this years ago on the Blu-ray releases of ABC's 'MODERN FAMILY'. The first two or three years of episodes were offered in Blu-ray (as well as regular dvd). I purchased the Blu-rays. Then suddenly, no more Blu-ray's only standard dvd. What could I do but purchase regular, fortunately the images of 'Modern Family' were still o.k. on regular dvd. Now I've been watching 'THE AMERICANS' (from FX) Blu-ray's from Netflix. The first season are all Blu-rays and the images and sound are spectacular. Then I started Disc One of the Second Season and they're only standard. Problem is they're possibly the WORST images I've seen on any release of a t.v. show: incredibly soft images and the credits at the beginnings of each episode are 'blurry and have severe ghosting or 'halo' effects around all the letters. Since I'm hooked on the series, I have no recourse here. Amazon doesn't even offer the following seasons in Blu-ray, only standard. Why would studios do this, is it cheaper? Don't they care about their products?

Standard discs i.e standard DEFINITION look horrible STREAMING.
Are you streaming hd or sd?
The discs themselves esp. when played on a br machine look fine.

I am not streaming nor will I ever be in the postion to initiate 'streaming'. I merely view t.v. shows from discs from Netflix. If I like the show, I purchase them to play and keep. I've never had any issues before with t.v. shows on disc that were not blu-ray and were only standard. My Blu-ray player somewhat 'up-converts' them (is that the word?), so standard looks a bit better on a blu-ray player. But last night I finished the last disc of Season One of 'The Americans', and then started on Disc One, Season Two of 'The Americans', and immediately saw a HUGE downgrade in video quality, almost like something filmed on t.v. in the 70's or 80's. Soft, blurry imagery and ghosting on all the printed credits. I cannot purchase ANY other seasons of 'The Americans' on Blu-ray because for whatever reason, the studio stopped issuing Blu-ray's of this show, only standard. My question remains as to WHY would studios do this?

I don't understand the industries continued obsession with DVD's. Disney Studios for example only releases it's television shows and DCOM's on DVD. BR's and HD television has been around long enough there should be BR releases.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Turn: Washington's Spies has season one on Blu-ray, but the rest I've only seen on DVD. Annoying.

It's even worse when they don't release an HD show on Blu-ray EVER. Some of my favorite shows: Blue Bloods, the Middle, Castle, etc. aired in HD, but you can only buy them on DVD if you want a physical copy. So I could watch them free when they originally aired in higher quality than the product they want me to pay for.

Some older shows like King of Queens have gotten widescreen and Blu-ray releases in Europe, but in the US we only have a really cheaply made DVD set with poor picture quality. The reruns they currently air for free are in widescreen with better picture quality, but if I actually want to buy it I get lower quality. Same with Seinfeld.

Blu-ray has been mainstream for at least a decade. Still baffles me that DVDs still have a foothold when Blu-rays and Blu-ray players are no longer expensive.

There is ONE exception to this trend that I'm aware of, (knowing only of the t.v. shows I own personally), where the reverse is true. I bought Season One and Two (separately) of the comedy series 'HAPPY ENDINGS', and they were only avaiable on standard dvd, which was fine as this was all that was available at the time, and the images were excellent. The show's FINAL season, season 3 was never released at all (for years) by it's studio. Then a month or two ago ALL 3 Seasons were released in a complete set ON BLU-RAY! I forget which studio released 'Happy Endings', but I'm happy some studio realized they cared about their product.

Doesn’t it still cost more to manufacture blus than DVDs? That alone could be the cause. And possibly poor sales. In the case of American Horror Story, Fox has released every season on R1 Blu-ray...until now. That’s six seasons on blu, but 7 was only made available on blu in Europe. US gets only a DVD. It’s possible the UK blu of season 7 is region-free but I haven’t confirmed.

I’ve also noticed a few new movies only getting DVD releases; no blu at all. Strange.

Even worse, many old TV Series are being issued on DVD-R, i.e., STEP BY STEP by Warner:-(

I just realized that Castle and the Middle are ABC which would be Disney. Meh.

I've noticed some of my complete series Blu-ray sets are all from Warner Brothers: Fringe, Person of Interest, and soon to be Longmire. Longmire is a weird case where some of the Blu-ray seasons are regular Blu-ray releases and other seasons are randomly only available "on demand" from Warner Archives. You can easily find the DVDs everywhere which is even more insane being a few of the seasons originally aired in 4K. Not sure why some studios push Blu-ray where others totally ignore it.

That's the only explanation that I can come up with, but it doesn't explain why insanely popular shows like Blue Bloods, the Middle, and Castle are only DVD. You'd think they'd bring in a lot of money.

I think DVD is still king because it's 100% reliable. I've had three Blu-Ray players and none of them work properly. Even after I update the firmware in the players when required the players stop playing the discs at any given time. Extremely frustrating after all the money I spent on discs. I've never had a problem with DVD. I occasionally buy a Blu-Ray movie but I make sure it has a DVD back-up. I'm hoping one day they'll make a Blu-Ray player that doesn't require firmware updates.

Interesting. I’ve never done a firmware update on any of my blu players ever. And never had a disc issue except in cases where the disc was defective and replacements were issued.

BR players were designed as an interactive platform. Thus they have hard drives which require software for running them. The downside? They can get buggy just like computers.

I'm envious. From day one my Blu-ray players conk out in the middle of a movie and have to have a firmware update. I even had to reset one of them back to it's factory presets and it played one movie all the way through. After that it started going out again. I'm Blu-Ray cursed.

From what I read on Blu-ray.com it plays fine on region A machines.

This is happening more & more to all kinds of TV series, it's like the owners don't want people owning hard copy HD versions of their programs, & a lot of the time the DVDs look great, but once you've gone Blu-ray you get to be a bit of a HD snob, & it's hard going back.

Here's my own CONSPIRACY THEORY and don't disregard it totally right off the bat, there may be 'some' truth to some aspect of it. I'm guessing here, but aside from people who buy their Blu-rays and DVD's from Amazon, wouldn't the single LARGEST company who buys Blu-ray's and Dvd's be NETFLIX? Netflix may just be THE largest purchaser of DISCS. I'm aware that Netflix has tremendous clout over getting 'deals' from the studios on the prices of their discs when purchased in (it's) extraordinary huge amounts. Netflix charges it's members MORE per month for renting/streaming Blu-ray product, but it's a 'flat-rate', rent One or rent 20, it's the same extra charge to the member. So, WHY would Netflix care if the T.V. Shows were all being released as standard dvd issues. it would be cheaper for Netflix to purchase 'standard' from the studios rather than 'Blu-ray.' I don't know about film releases from the studios though. Here's another thing to add to my theory: Nearly all the BBC / MASTERPIECE dvd's are available in both Blu-ray and Standard, when you look at them for sale at Amazon. But Netflix issues nearly ALL BBC / Masterpiece product in ONLY Standard dvd. Why? Because it's cheaper for them to purchase? I think someone in the homestate of Netflix's headquarters should have that's state's Attorney General look into this and, possibly, file a class-action suit IF it turns out there is 'something afoot'.
And if there's nothing afoot, we'll BLAME CANADA!

I've noticed as well that smaller movies that I rent on DVD from Netflix have been coming on DVD more often. These are movies that were released within the last year or two. Perhaps the sales aren't great enough on blu-ray to justify a release so they just stick it on DVD. Thankfully generally the video has looked fine on these. No major complaints. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing was true for TV shows that as streaming takes over they don't bother with releasing them on blu-ray because the money is coming from streaming licenses.
