Neither are very common in Norway. I think my hometown of Grimstad in the South had a Lidl a few years ago -- for a short period of time -- but they quickly went out of business. Maybe their business model is not suited for Norwegian markets. Either way, I have no preference, as I have no memory of shopping at either of them. I probably have, on some travel to a foreign country.

Oh bloody hell, I forgot our Aldi got turned into an Iceland the other year.

((And the co-op got turned into a Heron's, which got robbed seven times last year - by knife or gun-wielding types - and everyone seems to think that's an inside job type deal but the dibble haven't caught anyone ever for any of that.))

Iceland is pretty good though and sells frikadelle, which tastes enough like vegetable roll that I can sometimes pretend I'm eating an Ulster fry-up

Has to be Aldi. In fact we use neither, but our Lidl was built on the site of our beloved Granada Cinema and we've vowed never to set foot in the place.

Wins vote for most emotional reasoning. I like it. smile

I love how we're told to pronounce it 'leeeeedle'. I'm pretty sure we've got ads on tv in the UK at the moment telling us to go back rhyming it with 'little'.

Just as when I was a young 'un, Nestles was pronounced as it looks in english, as in "Nestles Milky Bar" sung in those ads with the Milky Bar Kid, and now we're told to pronounce it 'Nestlaaaay".

Wish these folks would make up their minds!

You're right Paul.
Previous TV ad campaigns I remember have said 'Every Lidl Helps', replacing Little with Lidl and a One Direction song was used in the past-ago (All The Little Things), again switching those words.
MAYBE, we've been saying the word LITTLE wrong all along and it should be said as the French and Italians say it (Leetle) wink

Here in Germany we have at least one Aldi an one Lidl in every town.
In our neighbourtown, where I grew up, meanwhile we have three Aldis.

The fruit and vegetables is fresher in Aldi.
Bakery stuff, like bread, rolls, danish etc. was more variety in Lidl,
but Aldi now came after, so sometimes I got my danish and bread from Aldi,
the next time from Lidl.

Good meat, in my opinion, is neither from Aldi nor Lidl.

Aldi makes points with their " every week " - specials, it' s almost everything from clothing to techniques. Quality much better than Lidl.

Okay. Like that split personality guy on the other side, with his Thread Ground Rules, I think I need to clarify.
I don't wanna hear about your lovely experiences' in Tesco, or how you fancy the girl in Asda, or when you bumped into the Queen in Waitrose, the thread title made it pretty clear.
Of the two German Empire supermarkets currently laying waste to the world, which do you prefer...and why?
Verstehen sie?

So my answer then is neither. I find that, though the prices are lower, the products mean little or nothing to me (especially as so many seem to have indecipherable writing on), so I stick with what I know.

The Yanks must be fascinated with this thread. Lidl is great, but a huge Aldi has just opened near me, so I used both, plus my local Waitrose, & then I go home & have a rest.
