Just curious. I know that the typical answer would be, "Why should you feel embarrassed?". Or, "Stand up for what you love!". Or perhaps, "No, I feel proud!" Etc, and you can add nausea if you like.

BUT, let's be completely honest for a moment. I'll start and then you can all follow on. This is the psychiatrist's couch, so you must be totally honest. He knows when you're pretending. I've got lots of music that I don't mind being "caught" listening to. BUT, I actually don't like when friends and family walk in and I've got STAR WARS loud on the music system. Or SUPERMAN, or RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Is it because they're "too well known"?

Well, not "too well known" would be heavenly choirs from '50s epics (which I love). Or bland decaffeinated Jerry Goldsmith like RENT-A-COP. I hate being caught listening to that.

Then there are supercool soundtracks like BARBARELLA. I love getting "caught" listening to that, except that people never walk in during the best bits. It always seems to be when "Love, Love, Love Brings Me Down" is on. And I feel embarrassed.

Now I rarely risk it, and play a lot of stuff through headphones only. Is that weird? Am I the only one? Please be honest with me. And please tell me "why".

Thanks.

Stand up and feel proud of it all.

Shouldn't this be on the other side?

Shouldn't this be on the other side?

Actually, it should! I was obviously too embarrassed that more people would see it!

Embarrassed? Never. The way I figure it, I've had to suffer through decades--DECADES--of the local NEDS blasting their shitty rap/hip hop garbage, Heavy Metal, dance pop, or Auto Tone BS, so if they happen to "catch" me listening to some Jerry Fielding, Dave Grusin, or Roy Budd, let 'em be enlightened against their wishes.

Look at this way: FSM "establishment" figures--the list of which is currently being compiled--won't see it, so the likes of...well, you know their names...

But Jim, what if you've got the Karaoke track from THE YAKUZA on when "caught"? That's what happens to me. Or have you made "unembarrassing playlists" to precisely avoid the feeling I'm talking about?

Aren't most FSMers safely locked away in their (parents') basement, which would prevent those embarrassing moments from occurring?

I think....you should shut your front door.

Far too many people are walking in unannounced. smile

When I was younger...sure.
I remember we* used to piley into a mate's front room and listen to our new LP's on their RecordPlayer.
Some would bring the latest U2 or REM album. Others maybe Never Mind The Bollock$ by The Sex Pistols or stuff by Pink Floyd or The Jam.
One time, I brought my ALIEN LP by Jerry Goldsmith (let's call it a brain fart).
I'm not sure it lasted to the end of Side A. I got ripped for that for awhile.
And maybe I'd lower the volume on my Walkman, on the bus or train, if it was being particularly loud and orchestral, and normal people were near me.
But as the years have rolled by, and you get more comfortable in your skin, I've grown quite proud of the music I've followed and championed and I don't care who hears it nowadays. Although I do think it's got an element of 'cool' to it now, or maybe people are just more tolerant or aware.
But the missus will let me know if she likes something...or DOESN'T, when it's let loose IN DA HOUSE!
The Grand Kids Love Da John Williams though. For a 1 and a 2 year old (3 next week), they're pretty good at guessing their Star Wars from their Superman's to their Jurassic's and Darth Vaders!!

*me and my scallie school chums

When somebody comes along and catches you listening to STAR WARS and thinks that's funny, throw PLANET OF THE APES at them at twice the volume! If they are still kicking then, a few concentrated maximum-volume blasts of ALIEN3 should do the rest. Then see who's laughing!

Same as Kev. Perhaps a little bit embarassment when I was a youngster, but not anymore. But as I think most of us can relate to, we were all a bit "different" as kids, weren't we? You know, as in 'special'? big grin

I like that sentence, Kev - "...particularly loud and orchestral..."; "...normal people..."

I think we're getting somewhere, and I can identify with most of your post even though I'd have to change some of the band names and film titles, me being a couple of years your senior, boy. Funny thing is, I don't feel as if I have become more comfortable in my skin. Well, I have in many ways, but in the case of STAR WARS and SUPERMAN and stuff like that, I've grown radically away from the films themselves, so now there's a bit of an irritation factor there - although I do still recognise it as "good music". I just don't feel right inadvertantly sharing it with other grown-ups. Not "normal people" anyway.

I suppose we're back to the oft-asked question, "Do you tell people about your hobby?" (although you can substitute the word "hobby" for another, if it offends you), and the answer is very often, "No, not directly, but if it comes up..." - and then we're into the tales of, "Have you got TOP GUN?" and stuff like that.

Thank you Kev for answering my question seriously, unlike the replies from people like Phelps, "Frank" Carson, Solly, and the OP.

And Thor posted another semi-serious one in the interim, which covered a lot of the ground I went over, but in less words.

And Nicolai - half-serious, thanks.

I can't claim representation for the others, but my replies were, and remain, serious.

Careful with calling McGann "boy", though; he's been a grandpappy since he was 30.

As for your wee topic here, it's been my experience that the mere mention of film music brings about its very own brand of silence from everyone else in the room. It's distnctive enough to be copywritable; the many copyright lawyers who masquerade as Star Track fans on this forum will tell you, even if you don't ask them.

A couple more things that just came to brain (they may, or may not, help you with your experiments, Dr Watt).
One time, we were on holiday (a sunny, pool-type one, in a foreign country that may have been Portugal or Cyprus) and we were by the pool (me and Mrs Carole) and we got talking to another couple (it seemed they were the only ones who spoke/were from UK...all the rest seemed angry and scary and seething...possibly Russian) and I don't know how, but music was being talked about and the guy asked a question and Carole just blurted out "Kev's into film music!!!". I don't think she was ripping on me (but she may have been). Anyway..this guy (at first) laughed and repeated FILM MUSIC!??! but then proceeded to quiz me about the music from various films (and sometimes he MEANT the score, like Back To The Future or Schindler's List). Then..as the week (weeks?? months??) wore on, EVERYTIME he SAW ME, he would continue this film music chat, asking me had I seen this film, or heard that music, to the point were I would come down to dinner pretending I was The Mummy or Michael Myers from Halloween, just to get a bit of peace. I think he was a CLOSET SCORE FAN who had never met ANYONE ELSE who recognised film scores.
There was another anecdote, relating to your experiments, Dr Watt(age??), but through all this typing, I've forgotten what it was. I'm sure it will come back to me...in due course.

I thought you were going to say, "and he had to sing the theme"!

By the way, it was Portugal, 1995. I remember it well.
