This 1973 film originally directed by Richard Fleischer, is probably the ONLY film I've ever wanted to see get a total remake. Originally starring Charlton Heston, Leigh-Taylor Young, Joseph Cotten and in his last (and one of his very best roles ever), Edward G. Robinson. (I was quietly hoping against hope that Robinson would snag a Best Supporting Actor Nomination that year, but Oscar continued to elude the man.) I can't envision any actors or actresses in any of the roles, I'd simply like to see the film 'updated' with great special-effects, a decent script, and a new great music score.

The film was set in 2022, and although the world's population has doubled since then, I don't think we are any closer to having to eat people today than we were in 1973. In what year should the remake be set?

Hard to see how it will have any impact if everybody already knows the Big Reveal. Even if they're too young for the original film, it's been parodied on the Simpsons.

Well, yeah, one thing for sure: If I were to remake SOYLENT GREEN today, the fact that "Soylent Green is people!" should be established early on, at the very least for the viewer. It is already well known, so there is no way to re-use that as a dramatic payoff. The story has to be told differently today. Perhaps more focused on the fact that many people could know what it is that they eat, but don't WANT to know.. they want their own "alternative facts" to be true... something like that. It would have to be conceived from a different angle.

The twist: Soylent green is..... VEGAN

Or made out of vegans, whatever.

The future never looked good for Heston.

It was an entertaining film in its own way, but it was so obvious to everyone five minutes into the film --- except Charlton Heston apparently, that "Soylent Green (was) people!!" I still enjoy it though, if just for Heston's usual over-the-top performance... smile

They have sort of updated the "where in the heck is the world's ricebowl going to come from in future" theme.

Neander Wallace is the world's food cum genetic engineer par extraordinare. Like J.F. Sebastian he makes his own stuff, except he's a bit off his head. The source of the protein for the food farms tended to by the likes of Sapper Morton, however, is not made clear. It could very well come from recycled bodies of one sort or another. It is never actually elaborated how the biochemical pathway to body building matter is arrived at. It is always overcast in the Blade Runner world, so getting the most from the Sun has to be something of a challenge.

I've never actually seen SOYLENT GREEN, although I see it's on Netflix, so I plan to. However, I was turned off a few years back when everyone joked about the ending and the "twist". Major spoiler which robbed me of the interest somewhat. But I'll get to it. Then I'll opine whether a remake is something worthwhile.
