As in the preceding film noir recommendation, another desperate character, this time played by Edmond O'Brien, must make his "dark passage" through the streets of San Francisco in D.O.A. (More here including Monday afternoon's showtime information throughout the U.S.):

Another excellent write up, Arthur. This really is the ultimate mystery/thriller/film noir. The plot is beautifully done, but more than that (as you pointed out) it is the transformation of an average Joe into a tough, driven avenger. He doesn't just lie down and take it, he does something about his life (as he is losing it) and essentially becomes a better man. When I recommend film noirs to people, I always suggest this one and Out of the Past.
