Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere soundtrack release – two great scores on one CD: RED and FAMILY COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY SOREN HYLDGAARD The world lost a wonderful person and hugely talented film composer on May 7, 2018. If it was not a name you knew, it was a name you should have known. But sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw. Some film composers do great work without ever getting to the next level, and some do lesser work while climbing straight up the ladder. There’s no predicting it – it’s got a lot to do with luck and timing and lots of other things that seem to be at the whim of the great out there. He began scoring films and TV in 1990 and his talent was immediately evident to those who heard his scores back then. He had a great gift for melody and even more importantly the gift of understanding how music should function in film. His first American film was Red, starring Brian Cox, which opens this CD. Red was a fairly low-budget film, a revenge thriller, and a very good one. The Los Angeles Times called the film, “An elegant and deceptively straightforward dramatic thriller.” Hyldgaard’s score is extremely evocative, mournful and quite beautiful, filled with the colors of rural America, and never overplaying its hand or overstaying its welcome. The second score is to the powerful 2001 Danish documentary, Family. The filmmakers could not have chosen a better composer for their film. Once again, Hyldgaard turns in a beautiful score, with gorgeous themes, underscoring all the emotions of the film exquisitely. RED/FAMILY is limited to 500 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping. CDs will ship by the second week of September, but never fear, we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. Unfortunately, I think Hyldgaard went somewhat "out of fashion" from the mid 2000s onwards. At the time, he was considered one of the great Nordic composers of that generation -- alongside Stefan Nilsson, Björn Isfält (who passed away in '97), Johan Söderqvist, Joachim Holbæk, Bøhren & Åserud etc. And then, of course, the Icelandic 'crowd' took over the scene (Johannsson, Arnalds, Sigur Ros, Örvarsson, Gudnadottir etc.) -- who are also great, but in a very different, less traditional way. Of course, there could also be health reasons for his lack of activity in recent years. In any case, I'm glad people like Bruce are still exploring his back catalogue.

Yep, Red is just a wonderful score, and so is Family. I encourage folks to listen to the samples of it and The Spider, which you get for free when you order Red.

Soren was a really great guy.

RED is a fantastic score. The Main Title is like a cross between Horner in SPITFIRE GRILL mode with Carter Burwell stylings sprinkled over it all. NOT rips or steals, just a flavour of their atmosphere over proceedings. There's even a theme that recalls (to my mind) the Restoration theme from JW's JANE EYRE. The main body of the score (as presented by the late composer) focuses on the lighter, more melodic side of things. Thankfully, BK added a suite of additional cues which contain some of the harder edged stuff. The score benefits from that variety and I may reprogram that suite somewhere within the body of the score. There's no tech credits to be found, so I don't know who performed it or how many players were involved, but while it's not huge orchestral, the performers are cleverly utilised to add effect but never swamp proceedings (I assume! The last time I extolled the virtues of a small-scale orchestral score, it turned out to be all samples played by the composer)*. The best thing I can say about the score is that it really makes me want to check out the film. The music from FAMILY is also very nice, despite one lengthy cue veering way too close to Schindler's Workforce from JW's SL score. One track had a lovely Craig Armstrong vibe to it. This is a CD well worth checking out and for people who aren't 'getting any' from the modern/processed sound of film scores. It's lovely in a proper 'actually sounds thought-out, written and performed' kinda way. Such a shame we lost one of the 'good ones' *Jeepers Creepers 3/Andrew Morgan Smith

I agree. Too bad we can't even convince others to listen to the samples. He was amazing.
