MONDAY, AUGUST 13 STAR TREK 4---Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have broken off contract negotiations with Paramount Pictures because Paramount wants to "hold the line on a budget" which would be a pay cut for the two actors. RAMBO 5---Sylvester Stallone posted artwork for the sequel with the caption, "A SAVAGE RISING!...soon." FIRST MAN---photo released of Ryan Gosling in the Neil Armstrong biomovie. BACK TO THE FUTURE---the cast of Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Thomas F. Wilson posed for a photo at the Boston Fan Expo. THE WALKING DEAD---Lauren Cohan said she will appear in six episodes of Season 9 before leaving for her new ABC series WHISKEY CAVALIER, and she added Maggie will not die. HOLMES AND WATSON---photo released of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in the Sherlock Holmes comedy movie. MARVEL STUDIOS---Antoine Fuqua will meet with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige to talk about Fuqua directing a Marvel movie. THE SIMPSONS---20th Century Fox is developing a CGI/live-action sequel movie along with a FAMILY GUY movie. JUNGLE CRUISE---the casting of straight actor Jack Whitehall as the stereotypically gay brother of Emily Blunt's character has created a backlash similar to Scarlett Johansson who was to play a transgendered crime boss in the RUB & TUG biomovie. Johansson left the movie due to the backlash. Walt Disney Pictures has not confirmed the character is gay. EVE---writer/director Matthew Newton left the Jessica Chastain movie after allegations were made of assault and domestic violence. FATALE---Hillary Swank stars in the movie about a female police detective who seduces a man into a murder plot. FOX---Fox is developing tv series based on the movies NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, DIARY OF A WIMPY KID and ICE AGE. TRIVIA---more James Bond movie trivia. In DIE ANOTHER DAY, Toby Stephens played Bond villain Gustav Graves/Col. Tan-Sun Moon. Stephens is the son of Oscar-winning actress Maggie Smith (THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE). Rosamund Pike, who played traitorous MI6 agent Miranda Frost, was friends with Chelsea Clinton at Wadham College, Oxford.

A Star Trek movie in Kirk's era with Kirk's crew without Kirk is a no sale for me. Recasting at this point is also a no sale. Pine finally was allowed to grow into the part and really get it just right. I don't want a movie without the character nor do I wish to see someone else take over. So it is my hope they come to terms or just simply move away from this era.

It's probably more to do with how he's one of the more successful actors in the cast. He's been turning up in some profitable films and is proving popular (along with Simon Pegg who is apparently not having any issues signing up). Or maybe he's tired of being the lead in a franchise that always lists John Cho first in the credits. But, methinks the agent is making much ado...

bottom line, he already had an existing contract that covered this sequel with a specific salary amount, a deal is a deal, so he is "acting" in bad faith to Paramount, and they are totally right to axe him That's exactly the opposite of what's happening. Pine had a deal with Paramount for $x of money. They are asking the cast to take salary cuts to save on budget. Pine isn't on board with that. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-trek-4-chris-pine-chris-hemsworth-talks-fall-1133802 "Pine and Hemsworth, among Hollywood’s A-list when starring in DC or Marvel movies, are said to be asking the studios to stick to existing deals. Paramount, according to insiders, contends that Star Trek is not like a Marvel or Star Wars movie and is trying to hold the line on a budget. The actors, according to sources, insist they have deals in place and that the studios are reneging on them, forcing them to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that is following a mediocre performer."

Do you honestly believe that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth, both of whom are seasoned professionals and whose bread and butter are appearing in blockbuster films, would refuse to perform under an existing contract for a high profile blockbuster film? If your theory were correct that there are existing contracts, but Pine and Hemsworth want to make a cash grab and are backing out of appearing unless the studio coughs up more money, than Paramount would send out its lawyers faster than you can say "beam me up" instead of the film being in jeopardy. What makes sense to me at least is that Paramount wants to tighten the belt and reduce the budget in hopes of making a profitable Star Trek film. Star Trek Beyond didn't perform anywhere near as well as Paramount would have liked, and many commentators are referring to it as at best underperforming or at worst a bomb. So something has to give, and trying to reduce the salaries of the cast is a way to do that. That Pine and Hemsworth don't want to play along is their business, but it sounds like Paramount is refusing to green light the film unless concessions are made. That said, I personally think Pine ought to do it, as Star Trek is what made him a star. But, he may be aware of things behind the scenes that we aren't, so perhaps he is jumping a sinking ship. IMHO each rebooted Star Trek film has gotten progressively worse, so I can't say I blame him. As for Hemsworth, much as I enjoy his performances, I think bringing him back is a terrible idea. Having Jim Kirk meet his father will undoubtedly result in a City on the Edge of Forever type dilemma where Jim Kirk can either save his father or preserve the timeline/save billions of lives. No thanks.

I don't think Pine or Hemsworth are very successful outside of playing Kirk and Thor, so they don't have the "star power" to draw in the big bucks on their own. It would be better if they just end the JJTrek series and do something else.

Despite the best efforts of Paramount, Trek will always have a certain ceiling, and that is in some ways totally fine and to be expected. The JJ series could function just fine without them.
