Ever read "Fast Food Nation"? I would not mind if all these fast food restaurants went the way of the dodo. Reminds me of the guy who went on a 1-month trial period of eating nothing but McDonalds food. If asked if he wanted to supersize it, he had to say yes. Had to eat everything. After a while, his doctor told him to quit because his body was going through organ failure. No lie! Lighten up, Nietzsche. I remember this ad playing often in South Florida in the 1970s. The Clint-esque Man with No Name mascot was classic. It was the only taco joint I ever ate in. The "El Scorcho sauce" was a delight. The last time I ate at a Taco Viva was around 1991-92. I miss Checker's burgers and fries. There are still some Checker's drive thru's I think mainly to the north, but man they had some tasty cheeseburgers. We had one Checker's in town but the employees sold more drugs than burgers sooooooooo it closed down. True, but if said restaurant leaves one region of the country, it might as well be gone, unless one's job allows travel on a regular basis. As I mentioned earlier in this thread (I think), I thought that Godfather's Pizza was dead and gone, only to find it alive and well in Idaho of all places. Both had branches in ear London's Piccadilly in the 80s and I loved them both - Wendy's burgers were much meatier and juicier than McDonalds or Burger King (and square too is that right, of am I just imagining it?) whilst Taco Bell introduced me to Mexican food, for which I'm eternally grateful. Taco Bell has recently re-opened a single branch at the Lakeside shopping mall but it is very small. Little Ceasar's is alive and well and is owned by Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers owner Mike Illitch I ate at one of the local Fuddruckers 2 weeks ago and will be headed back again soon. Bottomless soft drinks, hot cheese to dip your fries in and a wide assortment of sandwiches (Ostrich or Buffalo Burgers anyone?) All the local Burger Chef's were bought out by Hardee's then Hardee's faded away. I don't believe Roy Rogers or RAX ever made it to SE Michigan. I miss Uncle John's Pancake House and Howard Johnson's (Not drive throughs but still kinda fast foodish) I can remember my brother and I embarrassing our parents at Uncle Johns on the all you can eat pancake deal. We have one here in the town where I live in western Illinois and there are others int he surrounding communities. Once upon a time, there were four locations in Western New York. After a while, the number shrank to one, but I ate there all the time (favorite: Turkey Bacon Guacamole). I liked their food more than Subway. Then that was replaced by some pita joint. A couple months ago, I found out that it filed for bankruptcy. This was real and not one of God's cruelest jokes yet. A friend of mine years ago caught hepatitis from one of their restaurant's. He almost died , but he survived. GOLDEN CORRAL is the ultimate pig-out buffet. For about $10, it's all you can eat, and of course one must get their money's worth at a buffet, mustn't one? Quite a variety of stuff, but best imo is the good old fashioned meat-and-potatoes items -- pot roast with roasted potatoes and carrots and onions, and also the best meat loaf your dear ol' mom didn't cook, with perfect mashed potatoes and a very tasty brown gravy. Although they have a huge dessert bar, most of it (the pies and carrot cake and frozen soft-serve ice cream) is just so so. Disappointingly un-flakey crust on the pies, pecan pie with that wobbly gelatinous filling... Stick with the comfort food and you'll do okay. Since this thread originally posted, we've relocated from West Palm Beach FL to Austin TX, and re-connected with a few of the restaurants that had disappeared from Florida (Marie Callender's, Red Robin, Fuddruckers) and become acquainted with some of the fast food pavilions mentioned earlier (like In 'N' Out Burgers, which has taken the town by storm) by others. Sadly, there are no Beefsteak Charlies here either, so I guess they are gone altogether from the planet. Lots of good Tex Mex and barbecue around here, I have to say. Just to keep this thing going, anybody here cry a tear (as I did) with the departure of Bennigan's? I had three heart attacks directly attributable to their deep-fried Monte Cristo (they should have called it the Monte Crisco) sandwich... They seem to have all closed down everywhere. Also, a nickel to anyone out there who has sampled a glorious bacon cheese Whataburger... All-You-Can-Eat Alaskan crab legs for $12.00. They're all but extinct now (The restaurant. But it seems to me there are not as many all you can eat restaurant's as there was back in the 70's 80's 90's. Could it be part of the health craze movement. There are 2 of them in my town , but now with the bankruptcy issue, who knows, better go there more often and at least have more memories if it goes under soon. It's interesting, food is something you can't really keep with memories [well wine and beer etc etc] unless you want to stink up your house. I am glad this thread was brought back. Another thing that I really indulge in is food. I thank God my taste buds dislike vey few things and I have made it my business in life to try as many different food items and drinks as possible.
