I have been really wanting to buy this for a while now. I know LLL has a great and complete presentation but I always find ways to be cheap too. I keep on seeing the older Scotti Bros. release of this score. Is this release really that bad? I know all the music is not there but how is the sound? Is it worth the cheap price if I just want the bare bones?

No, avoid, not even worth on the cheap IMO.
He left off some of the best stuff for dull suspense. It does touch on a few of the key thematic pieces but I always was bored by the album program. The complete score, while long, so prepare yourself, was a revelation.
Ugly packaging, muddy sound, and even the sequencing, never worked for me at least.
Curious to see if/what the defenders say.

You'll just have to wait until next season for an answer.

For a CD which can be procured for 73¢ on Amazon, the Scotti Bros. album is a more than adequate representation of the score. I say go for it.

dbrooks. I hope if/when you bite the bullet & drop the $5 on this (dont forget your 3.99 ship on top of 73 cents!) you'll share your thoughts. I love when expansions show a new light onto a once mediocre experience. The Shadow comes to mind as a big 180 listen, as does this one. It's too bad these things get so expensive, true, but the bigger badder Cliff turned a 'meh' listen into 'holy shit this is incredible!'

I found that the expanded is a much better presentation if only because so many great action cues were left off. I'd go for the expanded.

First release of this score I ever bought was the LaLaLand expanded release. Great score in that presentation for sure.

Yeah I agree. I was really let down by that album. Way too short.

The expanded release of this score is the one to get for sure. The original release was underwhelming to say the least. I'm glad I only saw Cliffhanger more recently because I would have been majorly disappointed if I had gotten a hold of the score and it had been that first release. It's a great one for sure, my currently only listen of a score by Trevor Jones.

Just how could they leave off what is in my eyes the BEST damn music in the score off that initial release?

I have to say, I gleefully chuckle at these threads. We're about split now? Poor Brooks, we don't make it easy for a guy. I haven't seen the film for a few years and was going to add see the movie to make the call, but isn't this a sound efx heavy-favored mix? I think airplanes and weapons fire buried the action cues.

Yep! Best cue in the whole film. It’s the reason I bought the old album and I was pissed to find out it was missing.

GoblinScore, I do appreciate all the honest advice. I don't mind the split opinions at all. I am glad I am getting plenty of feedback and much to think about. Thanks everyone.

Totally, I love reading the differing opinions as well, didn't intend any snarkiness in my post, for a change! These threads are good to either clear the air or get one to dig up something they haven't heard for awhile.
Since this is a cold, snowy score, I'm out if luck - off-season. something, I think!, Onya alluded to above.
100° here, so no play for Sly now! Have to head to Rambo land for that fix, haha!

The original album had a mastering error, so the track titles don't match up. The LLL release corrected that.

I had the original release for years and only listened to it a handful of times...didn't care for it overly much. The complete release came out and it was a revelation. Now it is one that gets played very regularly. I say go for the expanded complete release if you can do so.

This cue's highlights for me are pretty much rewritten Star Wars (or Empire, I need to listen again). It's actually through this score's temp tracking that I ended up finding the trailer music from The Fugitive (it was The Abyss, but I didn't know the score at the time). I rented a bunch of Trevor Jones-scored movies and learned NOTHING, then thought that there was some Predator in Cliffhanger's sound, so I rented a bunch of Silvestri movies and found it.

I should give this score another chance. The Dynasty version of his own Mohicans theme that turns into The Rocketeer is one of my least favorite pieces of music ever, but I liked the cave-echo synth (that Jones would later use to great effect in his score for In The Name Of The Father).
