A storm blew out my 1080 TV, my Apple TV and my modem. That's the damage thus far, don't know what else might have been fried.
Anyway I had a Samsung 1080 LED 49 inch Smart television. Space and budget is an issue. Not looking to get a 4K television or massively upgrade in screen size, (it won't fit the space allotted)
I did a quick search on Best Buy and the good news is what cost me $1200 five years ago is going for around $400 or $500 dollars today.

Any suggestions for a comparable replacement?
Sorry to hear about your troubles solium. Have you ever considered a projector? You can get them for a fraction of the price of a 90 inch television. I have one and love it! It's also a 3D projector and the picture quality is fantastic.
@ Jim Cleveland - Hee hee, the UHF/VHF kind? Thanks for the offer though. Should I try DavidinBerkeley's neighborhood streets?
Ha...........................................................................................ha. I bought this TV at J.C. Penney in - I think - '98, and the only reason I stopped using it was because my brother bought me a flat-screen for my birthday last year, in addition to also getting me cable and high-speed internet(I'd never had HS internet before).
The same thing happened to my sister in Myrtle Beach recently. A power surge destroyed their TV and some other equipment. Sorry to hear it. Just be thankful she didn't fall from a balcony!
So sorry to hear about your problem solium. Lightning can be so destructive. A lightning strike caused our house fire years back and lightning took out my Thin Client at home a few years ago in spite of a surge protector.
If you live near a Costco, you might want to consider a Vizio. We got a 55" for our bedroom recently and it's wonderful. You can get a 48" for approximately $330.00 and they offer a reasonable service plan. Their 50" is only $ 430.00. Yes they are smart tv's but you don't have to utilize the options.
To all, thanks for the kind words and suggestions.
I got my new modem from my internet provider but my internet is going in and out. So I have to figure out why that’s happening. Actually I have WiFi connection but no Ethernet connection.
Yes, I lost a lot of expensive equipment (and the television was hooked up to a surge protector), but I know it could’ve been much worse, so it helps to keep things in perspective.
Go the nearest library and look up the latest CONSUMER REPORTS performance/reliability ratings for tv sets.
I think Sony and Samsung are usually the best.
I agree that Samsung and Sony are high quality. We have a Samsung in the family room and my son has a Sony and an LG in the man cave. When solium said that budget and space were issues, I thought this might be a nice alternative.
I do see that Best Buy has the exact TV solium had for less than $330.00 (actually $299.99 when you add to cart) so that might be his "best buy."

Yeah, that's amazing! A quarter of the price I originally paid for it! I think I have to move fast too because I believe stores are discontinuing sales of non 4K models. And I'll have to use my Best Buy card for any purchases like this.

Do you also have CR's tv reliability ratings from the same issue?
Reliability may be factored into the ratings order, but neither the ratings nor the accompanying article in that issue mention anything specific about reliability.
