MIDWAY---Luke Evans (THE HOBBIT) will play Commander Wade McCluskey, who was awarded the Navy Cross for leading the pivotal dive bomber attack on the Japanese carrier fleet at Midway, the turning point of the war in the Pacific Theater. Woody Harrelson will play Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander of the US Pacific Fleet in World War II. Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDENCE DAY) is the director.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK---Miles Teller (FANTASTIC FOUR) will play the son of Goose in the Tom Cruise sequel.

THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK---Alan Taylor is returning to direct THE SOPRANOS prequel movie set in Newark during the 1960s race riots. It is not known what original characters will be in the prequel.

STAR WARS---Ahmed Best, who voiced Jar Jar Binks, said fan hatred of Jar Jar, almost led him to commit suicide, “I faced a media backlash that still affects my career today. This was the place I almost ended my life. It’s still hard to talk about. I survived and now this little guy is my gift for survival.” Earlier, Best said he, “had death threats through the internet. I had people come to me and say, ‘You destroyed my childhood’. That’s difficult for a 25-year-old to hear.”

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE---Nicolas Cage will provide the voice of Spider-Man Noir in the Sony Pictures animated movie.

HOBBS AND SHAW---Vanessa Kirby (THE CROWN, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-FALLOUT) will play the sister of Jason Statham's character in the FAST AND FURIOUS spinoff movie.

CHILD'S PLAY---MGM remake of the 1988 horror movie is underway.

LOST---Evangeline Lilly said she's not interested in a possible LOST reboot, “There’s a rumor every year that they are going to reboot LOST. The thing about reboots and remakes is that I don’t like them in general, period. I want people to leave STAR WARS alone! I did love ROGUE ONE, as an aside. But for the most part, I don’t usually love them.”

ROE v. WADE---Jon Voight, Robert Davi, Corbin Bernsen, Steve Guttenberg, John Schneider and Stacey Dash star in this movie about the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion.

TRIVIA---in INDEPENDENCE DAY, the First Lady's Secret Service agent is played by John Bennett Perry, father of Matthew Perry.

Tambor was cast as a transgender 4 years ago, Leto 5 years ago, and Huffman 13 years ago. Johansson obviously doesn't realize that times have changed and that casting outside one's race, ethnicity, or gender (all 112 of them) is now taboo.

So it has to be a transgender actor/actress or else it's offensive? Crikey. People like to get angry over nothing.

Seems like actors will need to get public approval and official sanctioning from various groups before they're allowed to consider accepting roles. What a great future.

Just as the days are gone when an Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, or Anthony Hopkins could play "Othello," or Caucasian actors could play Asians (Peter Lorre as "Mr. Moto"; Christopher Lee as "Fu Manchu"; Peter Ustinov as "Charlie Chan"), so too is the time past when "straight" actors can play gays or transgenders. Doesn't seem to matter if there are not yet any transgender stars.

Pretty soon an actor won't be able to play a villain unless they've actually murdered someone in real life.

And actual sportsmen and women will have to play sportsmen and women, no doubt. So "Escape to Victory" was partly ahead of its time.

How pathetic it is that people have so little grasp on reality, apparently, and such empty, piteous lives that a movie character "destroyed their childhood" and that they would even make death threats against Best.

I never knew that sort of stuff had happened to Mr. Best and I ache for him and hope all's well with him now.

Jar Jar's voice was never the issue for me; it was the over emphasis on the character and the over-the-top stupidity and the calculated marketing hype that made me want to blast him. He was the "Gilligan" of Star Wars, only more dumb. His voice and speech mannerisms were annoying, but did have some appeal and I thought Best did a great job.

Trivia: Rance Howard is the guy who would not allow Clint Howard's head to be shaved for "The Corbomite Maneuver." That's why Clint had to wear a bald cap.

I never quite got the Jar Jar hatred, and why it was taken to such an extreme. Regardless, anyone who would send death threats over disliking a secondary character in a Sci-Fi Fantasy franchise needs to have their head examined.

Fine to hate the character, but the actor was just doing his job. The personal attacks towards him are sad and pathetic.

Scarlett Johansson has pulled out of the "Rub & Tug" project, has apologized for her insensitivity in daring to believe that she could play someone unlike herself, and has expressed thankfulness for the education she has received from "the community." That pretty much shuts the door going forward on anyone other than transgenders playing transgenders. If a star with the clout of Johansson couldn't stand the withering criticism, how can any normal actor?

Tough luck for the producers/investors, who thought they were investing in a Scarlett Johansson film, but instead find that their lead actress (actor?) will likely be an unknown, and that their movie will likely be consigned to oblivion, assuming that it gets made at all.
