Just came across this title and, well, it's got a pretty hefty price tag so I'm not sure I'll be shelling out for it any time soon.

"In Experiencing Film Music: A Listener’s Companion, Kenneth LaFave guides the reader through the history, ideas, personalities, and visions that have shaped the music we hear on the big screen. Looking back to the music improvised for early silent movies, LaFave traces the development of the film score from such early epic masterpieces as Max Steiner’s work for Gone With the Wind, Bernard Herrmann’s musical creations for Alfred Hitchcock’s thrillers, Jerry Goldsmith’s sonic presentation of Chinatown, and Ennio Morricone’s distinctive rewrite of the Western genre, to John Williams’ epoch-making Jaws and Star Wars. LaFave also brings readers into the present with looks at the work over the last decade and a half of Hans Zimmer, Alan Silvestre, Carter Brey, and Danny Elfman."

I haven't, That. But the "Reviews" at the bottom of your link are a bit of a turn off. Although it has a thumbs up from the great Charles Fox, it does seem to be aimed at people who have absolutely zero knowledge of film music. If that's its purpose, fine, but we here are surely of higher intelligence. I'd be wary.

“We here are surely of higher intelligence”

I think this would go quite nicely on the FSM message board banner, don’t you all agree?

Alan Silvestre? And who is Carter Brey?!? I had to google that name, and see that he's a cellist. Not sure what he has to do with film music, though.

I did the same thing. Must be a friend of the author.

Ooh, nice. That'll go well with my Nourmand & Marsh "Film Posters of..." books :-)

Cover art book arrived today - thanks for the recommendation on that. It only covers the 50s to the 70s but that's an era with some of the most imaginative illustration and design anyway: there's some lovely stuff in here. Today's studio design departments could do with throwing a few more actual artists/illustrators/letterers into the mix, to break up the usual Photoshop stars'-head-shots with Trajan sameyness.

Carter Brey does have an IMDb entry, a rather insignificant one:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3332275/

Maybe he means Carla Bley, whose connection with the world of film music is pretty minimal:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0088346/

I first thought it was a typo and that he meant Carter Burwell. In either case, I'll echo whoever said it's probably an acquiantance of the author who has had some experience with film music (playing on some etc.). It just felt odd to see that name among the other big shots. smile

Glad you like it! The 1950s through maybe early 1970s was a golden era for LP cover art design. Plus, that book was aimed at the lounge crowd.

Got it.
Will review it in short time.

At first glance, its seems pretty standard and doesn't cover enough of the modern scene.
The bibliography is not very extensive.
