MARWENCOL is one of my favourite documentaries. It's about a guy who is brutally assaulted by utter scumbags outside a bar and as a result loses most of his memories and copes by building dioramas for his GI Joe action figures and taking photos of their adventures. His photos are great, i have one of his books. The story follows him through his recovery and as a person he's complex and interesting to follow. It's a really great doco i would urge anyone to see. Now, they've made a film of the story. I think Steve Carrel is very well cast. The approach i am unsure about, it seems unusual and i can sort of see what they're going for but i'd be interested in seeing if it works well or not. I hope it's good, the story deserves to be well told outside of the documentary. The approach they appear to be taking might hit the the emotional truth and add a bit of levity. Here's a link:

If you enjoy the new film, 'Welcome to Marwen', than PLEASE, do yourself a favor and view the Original Documentary that it's based on: 'MARWENCOL'. I viewed this (available at Netflix) and it's so marvelous. No great special effects, no Sylvestri score, simply brilliant storytelling!

The trailer hints but doesn't say why he was assaulted ; gay bashing?

Not available on Netflix here in Norway, it appears. A shame. I had no idea there had been a documentary about this guy. Would have been nice to see before the upcoming feature film version.

The Carrel film is getting panned, alas. But I'm amazed the truly excellent documentary is so hard to find and so expensive if you do. I mean as a DVD or blu. Hopefully Other regions of Netflix starts to show it.
