I start this thread because I realize this particular theme is especially important for some fans and should not go down
between other release requests.
If Golden-Age scores appear in this LA-LA LAND RECORDS/UNIVERSAL PICTURES HERITAGE COLLECTION CD series,
then surely only(or primary) as CD sets, like INTRADA's THE FRANZ WAXMAN COLLECTION or
SAE's THE DARK SIDE OF MAX STEINER or KRIZERLANDs Golden Ages scores CD sets(... AT FOX / ... AT PARAMOUNT).
Look on the successful MUSIC BOX RECORDS 2CD set FRANCIS LAI AT UNIVERSAL PICTURES(of course that are not scores
from the Golden Age), it was sold out very quickly. The time for single score releases(Golden Age) is largely gone.
Of course there are always rare exceptions.
I think a mega-classic score like GONE WITH THE WIND(next year the 80s anniversary!) would definitely get
a stand-alone release. The fantastic RHINO-2CD set is now 22 years old.
I don't know if it makes sense to check if today's technology could be a release with even better sound quality.
And maybe there are additional unreleased alternative tracks in the archive.
Just compare the old Rhino 2CD set of BEN-HUR with the magnificent FSM 5CD set!
But back to scores from the UNIVERSAL PICTURE archives ...
In the age of rising shipping costs and ever less demand, combined CD sets seem to be the last logical way
for a cost-effective release of these scores.
If LA-LA-LAND RECORDS decides to release Golden Age scores combined in 2, 3, 4 or 5CD sets,
what kind of CD box/set would you prefer?
CD sets that only include scores from a single composer(for example BERNHARD HERRMANN AT UNIVERSAL PICTURES)?
CD sets that contain only scores of a particular film genre(western/crime/SF/Horror/etc.)?
If you prefer an genre set, make a list of the scores you want in a CD set of genre X.
There could of course also be CD sets with combined scores from a certain decade(UNIVERSAL PICTURES IN THE 40s, 50s, etc.)
or a certain film director(for example ALFRED HITCHCOCK AT UNIVERSAL PICTURES).
If you want a decade-CD-set, make a list of score you want in the CD set of the 30s, 40s, 50s and maybe 60s.
What would you prefer?
And if you have several wishes, it certainly makes sense to list your wishes in a ranking according to personal importance
of the release(if possible)!
I am sure MV will look on this thread.

From archiving standpoint it would be the best to have the sets dedicated to specific composers, but from label's perspective and to generate more sale those probably have to have wider appeal therefore it would make sense to have them done thematically - eg more unreleased Hitchcock movie scores from various composers combined into a single set - in case those would not be released separately.

But still one of my grails that hopefully will be part of the series (although not exactly Golden age) is FRENZY featuring both Ron Goodwin and Henry Mancini scores on a single CD or possibly as a 2CD set (if they couldn't fit on a single disc).

I would love a set of the Universal monster movies - particularly if anything survives of The Bride of Frankenstein, or anything of the later Frank Skinner or Hans J. Salter scores. And speaking of Skinner, a set of his scores would be GREAT!. Especially The Man From the Alamo, one of my holy grails.

What you and Score-Man-X have posted above makes a lot of sense. I hope it registers with MV.

I hope it registers with MV.

Were I MV, I might be slightly miffed that after all I'd done to achieve everything I'd achieved in the world of film score CD releases, people still assumed things like this would have to "register" with me.

But I am not MV, so I will not say anything.

But you have ! I didn't mean for the word" register" to sound course.

Golden Agers are so damn greedy!

You have tons of individual releases AND the Gerhardt Classic Film Scores series and still you beg for more.
Sheesh!

If you are so unhappy with golden age releases, why don't you save it for the other thread.

Here is a set I would love to see on CD. If anyone who loves western scores from Universal that spans the late 30's to the mid-60's please chime in. I'm not perfect; so let's have your two cents. Some of these films you can find on YouTube. The title of the set would be FRANK SKINNER WESTERNS AT UNIVERSAL . Two of those listed are pseudo- westerns. One takes place in Mississippi and the other in Virginia. DESTRY RIDES AGAIN, WHEN THE DALTON'S RODE, CANYON PASSAGE, TAP ROOTS, THE MAN FROM THE ALAMO, CHIEF CRAZY HORSE, SHENANDOAH,and Mr. Skinner's last THE APPALOOSA.

I'm gonna have to depend on the lot of you to keep me up to speed, Golden Age wise, as to what I shouldn't miss out about this development (though I'm not a fan of musicals... unless they come with tremendous instrumentals, then I'm game).

If Lukas' name was somehow attached to any of this Universal initiative, I'd be more confident of some of these kinds of scores having an ideal advocate. But unfortunately, I think he might be more engrossed in the near future with "Sky Fighter" rather than with "Destry Rides Again".

Basil, I don't know if westerns are your thing, but for me it's not what somebody we hold in high esteem thinks, it's what pleases my ear.

Back in the 1970s or early 1980s, film music devotee Tony Thomas worked with Hans J. Salter to produce this LP of the composer's music from westerns he had scored. The album had tracks or short suites from 10 different westerns, all but three of them (The Far Horizons, The Tall Stranger, and The Oklahoman) from Universal. It was Salter who provided the tapes for the recording. Hopefully, Universal has the originals, or can make arrangements with the Salter estate to back-fill their library, so complete versions of some of these scores can be made available.

So glad you mentioned Hans Salter. He was the other major composer of westerns at Universal. I was going to do him next, but I am happy you got there first.

Tony Thomas also released an LP of "The Fantasy Film Music of Hans J. Salter." For this release, Thomas limited himself to three scores from Salter's work at Universal, with 11 tracks (24:44) from THE GOLDEN HORDE (1951), 8 tracks (13:20) from THE PRINCE WHO WAS A THIEF (1951), and a suite (11:10) from THE BLACK SHIELD OF FALWORTH (1954). Only the latter has had a CD release, as part of a 20-minute suite on a 1994 Salter compilation disc from Intrada.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. No matter. Westerns are one of my favorite categories, so I agree with your previous comment.

A third Thomas release of Salter's Universal work was this two-LP set, which shows Salter's versatility, with each of the four sides devoted to a different type of score. They were:

BEND OF THE RIVER (1952)- 11 tracks (23:53)
THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN (1942) - 8 tracks (23:27)
AGAINST ALL FLAGS (1952) - 10 tracks (22:01)
MAGNIFICENT DOLL (1946) - 10 tracks (24:05)

The latter title, a Revolutionary War drama/love story with Ginger Rogers and David Niven, is the least known of the four.
