This Title will begin shipping on the week of June 26, 2018 Dragon’s Domain Records, to be distributed through buysoundtrax.com, presents THE BASIL POLEDOURIS COLLECTION, VOLUME 3, featuring two previously unreleased scores composed by Basil Poledouris (CONAN THE BARBARIAN, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, LONESOME DOVE, FREE WILLY) during his early days as a film composer. 1977’s TINTORERA: KILLER SHARK is renowned in bad movie circles, but contains an excellent score. While the title of this Mexican exploitation movie promises JAWS-like terror and suspense, the actual film is not really so much about killer sharks but about two guys who spend their time hunting and bedding warm, willing women and only briefly actually hunting and snuffing cold, hungry sharks. 1979’s DOLPHIN is an ecological documentary about the plight of the dolphins in the late ‘70s, really one of the first documentary films to recognize and examine the intelligence of these oceanic mammals and promote the notion that they should not be regarded as commodities for our entertainment or the by-catch of the Tuna industry. Both scores obviously appealed to Basil due to his love of the sea and of sailing, and both scores reflect the passion of a rising young musician soon to emerge into his fullness as a composer. Basil’s musical score for TINTORERA is a mix of synth-based suspense tracks and catchy pop rhythms; he also composed and arranged the film’s main song. By successfully steering away from any musical reference to JAWS in his TINTORERA score, Basil created a potent shark motif of his own using the low growling drones of a Moog synthesizer, accompanied by a variety of percussion, keyboard, and other underwater noises that essentially create the sound of being underwater, circled by a menacing, killer shark. Two lighter themes focus on the characters as they pursue their licentious lifestyles, sharing and trading partners with hedonistic abandon; these tuneful, poppy/jazzy melodies featuring woodwind, saxophone, marimba, acoustic and electric guitars and keyboards are taken through a number of variations associated with love scenes, tourist destinations and montages. For DOLPHIN, Basil provided a gentle, rhythmic main theme and many specific pieces of music for the film’s individual segments. The score was written for a small ensemble consisting of five players using a simple palette of guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesizers, drums, and percussion; Poledouris is among them, playing keyboards. The result is a quietly intimate score built around folk melody and harmonic structures that fit each segment’s tone that is also a delight to listen to on its own. This release is a limited edition release of 500 units. THE BASIL POLEDOURIS COLLECTION, VOLUME 3 is now available for pre-orders through buysoundtrax.com and starts shipping on the week of June 25, 2018. I hope one of these days someone will release the fantastic dramatic Poledouris score to the 1984 TV movie Amazons. One of my holy grails.

I've not heard "Dolphins", but I had the displeasure of hearing the shark one by skimming the terrible film to hear the unreleased score (the best thing about the film is the brief nudity; that's saying something!). What I said about the score in another thread: Tintorrea is a low-key, mostly electronic score with this annoying nee-nor-nee-nor ... nee-nee-nor electronic sound for the shark. It's more than just a different take of "Jaws", it's terrible. You could probably skim a couple decent cues from it for a compilation.

If you got the DVD release you more then likely didn't hear most of Basil Score. He scored the long original version (which is on YOUTUBE) and that contains his score There was a later shorter version of the film (That is the version of DVD here in the USA) which replaced chucks of his score with library cues and had different footage as well. Either version isn't shall we say isn't a good viewing experience, but the longer way at least has his score. Ford A. Thaxton

I used a Youtube load that had Basil credited. I will, of course, just in case, listen to the samples later today when I have some time.

I'm surprised Intrada's release of The Valley of Gwangi didn't impress you at least! But in general I do get more excited about premieres (or at least significant expansions) rather than reissues or slight expansions, which it feels like have been more common lately. Yavar

Of course it's personal taste. I love Intrada but I think I share your feelings about 2018 so far for them. They ended 2017 with an AMAZING one-two punch of Damnation Alley complete and ELEVEN Waxman premieres on FOUR packed CDs for the price of two (and sounding shockingly great to boot...especially the 30s stuff against all odds). They've had some nice releases since then but nothing that really surprised me until Gwangi, which was supposedly lost in complete form. This Poledouris Collection Vol. 3 was a BIG surprise to me, especially in that it covers more of his 70s work rather than 80s which is where I thought this series would primarily reside. Speaking of significant expansions, if you love the Silver Age and haven't picked up Intrada's big Hurry Sundown 2 disc set, you NEED to get it. It's an amazing score and they just discounted it 33% to a 1 CD price! http://store.intrada.com/s.nl?sc=15&category=&search=newly%20reduced One of my favorite expansions of the past decade. Yavar
