Not a massive Cameron fan.

I may have to go for Titanic.


He's a great "filmmaker" from a technical stand point. His films are stunning and usually push the limits visually speaking. But he's a terrible "actors" director. Most of the performances in his films are unconvincing.

TITANIC is easily the best. And for me, AVATAR was by far the worst, but that's another question.

Why is Avatar the worst? I saw it once in the theater and was entertained for a few hours. (though I've never seen it a second time.) So I'm kinda in the middle, it didn't rock my world but it was a few good hours of escapism. I know a lot of people "hate" the film, but the only thing they can point to is disliking the big bad corporation as the villains.

At the very least, this was the movie I last saw with a packed house, no annoyances from the audience because they were fully on board and where the time just sort of flew by.


I too love this film and glad it won so many Oscars.

Aliens.

Could've been T2 if he'd kept Michael Biehn in the final cut.

His films are truly incredible. He's a pioneer and a brilliant storyteller, visually and conceptually. However, the dialogue that he writes is pretty terrible. It's gotten much worse over time, too. It's such a shame, because if he was a sharp, intelligent writer of genuine-sounding dialogue (or if he'd hire other writers), his films would be more consistently terrific. He has so many talents but his need to have full control holds him back a bit, in my eyes.

"That's what I'm talkin' bout, bitch" roll eyes

"[They'll] eat your eyes for jujubes" roll eyes

"They're just pissing on us without even giving us the courtesy of calling it rain" roll eyes

All examples from Avatar, because it easily has the most cringe-worthy dialogue. If he'd hire Akiva Goldsman or someone great I'd truly be excited for the sequels. He has written some good dialogue over the years ("Why do they call him 'the sand spider'?" - "Probably because it sounds scary"), but more of an exception than a rule.

The actual act of directing a film accounts for just a portion of the result. What comes before and after (the writing and the film editing) are at least as big a deal. Take two copies of the same film reels, give them to a bad editor and good editor, and you can get back a piece of crap and a terrific movie. And of course the director is probably in the editing suite having a huge influence on what he's going to get from his footage.

The thing with Cameron's best films is the stunningly good decisions he made, over and over, throughout the process.

Cameron isn't a great writer by any stretch, but he's a fantastic storyteller. His characters are usually just walking cliches, but he can spin a heck of an engaging story using every cliche in the book.

I have a lot of love for The Abyss, overall I think it his most interesting film, far superior to his biggest commercial success Avatar. I wish he could have brought the end of picture to something a bit more solid, but quite a remarkable picture, the production in the giant nuclear power plant, with actors in actual suits in actual water, pretty extraordinary, it would probably never be done like this again, it will all be CG fakery now.

I keep hearing THE ABYSS is coming to Blu-ray and 4K but then it never happens, so I'm still not sure?confused

The Abyss and True Lies have officially been announced as coming to 4K but the former was due in March this year and still no sign of it!

The Terminator is possibly his best writing and is a terrific mix of good pacing, acting and just the right amount of humor. Aliens and T2 are two of the best sequels ever made.

For me, it's a tossup between the original TERMINATOR and ALIENS.

(At least those are the two i find myself watching the most.)
