Well, after waiting for Banos to give us something worthwhile again after a few years of painfully generic Hollywood scores and badly missed opportunities, he's somewhat-redeemed himself with this new sports effort for the generic-looking inspirational high school family film.

It's EXACTLY what you expect - soft character-based string and piano tones, with swelling strings and brass during scenes of redemptive wins for the (volleyball?) team at hand. You've heard it all before, but after so many RC-infused anonymous scores since his move to Hollywood, it's nice to hear Banos doing some purely orchestral once more, even if that distinct voice he had begun to develop in the early 2010's is basically absent.

There's an action motif carried by brass, first heard in "Home Coming Game", that's especially enjoyable, and some of the action rhythms here are surprisingly Goldsmithian at times. It's also cool to hear Banos incorporate a traditional drum line into the orchestral percussion during these cues, a nice and inspired touch.

"The Victory" will especially please fans of 90's sports scoring staples and of the softer cues, "Missing Caroline" is affecting and makes a vie for genuine depth.

Fans of Williams Ross, Mark Mckenzie, Rachel Portman, 2000's era Horner et al. will likely enjoy this very much. It is, by contrast with Banos' disappointing American scores of late, something of a decent return to form, even if it's character is overall a little generic.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I have only sampled a few cues and my selection probably wasn't very good considering what I've heard sounded exactly like what some high school bands may play during these "events". Just a lot of brass and percussion.

Give it another try Lokutus, it's no masterpiece, but after a disappointing slew of scores from this composer of late it's definitely a step back in the right direction. And there's really only a few cues incorporating the drum corps-type stuff, and when he does it's fleetingly at that.

Hey bobb. Have you heard WE ARE MARSHALL by Christophe Beck?
Your description of this score sounds very similar to it.
Young Thundering Herd is one of the greatest tracks I've ever heard

That sounds... Basically just like Banos' score here, and presumably served as the temp track. The film's plots even sound pretty identical. Thanks for the share, Kev.

After the furious drumming in the first minute or so of Young Thundering Herd, I never fail to get goosebumps when Beck brings in the main theme with orchestral backing.

Good stuff, McGann.

Just listened to this. What a gorgeous score. Beautiful tenderness and exciting action. A good companion to Rudy and some of William Ross's sports stuff. Certainly the best I've heard from Banos recently. Was not impressed with the Commuter score. Too bad that this doesn't have a FLAC OR CD release.
