The great thing about art is that you don't need to know a thing about the person to love the work. It speaks for itself.

It’s an interesting question: can we separate the art from the artist? And do we want to continue supporting the artist financially? I’ll never pay to see or own another Woody Allen film again, or a Roman Polanski film, or a Kevin Spacey film, or a Bryan Singer film, etc etc, but the DVDs on my shelf aren’t helping them. Haven’t tried to watch anything again, but I wonder whether it will be stomach churning. Probably easier to see something where the gross artist is offscreen (Midnight in Paris, for instance, as opposed to Annie Hall) since there isn’t the constant reminder there. Morrissey being a real pig has plagued him through his whole career, though I still listen to his albums. I wonder where I draw the line. When it goes beyond words to actions maybe?

I hate the music of Richard Wagner but I love the man. Especially his racial theories. Brm

The Solium Forgiveness I was crushed to learn Jack London was a racist who excluded black folk from his Socialist agenda. The Marshall Disappointed Some of those abhorrent ideas Mr. London entertained were unfortunately fairly common at that time. Beliefs that different human races battled for supremacy and that it was a "survival of the fittest" race of human races were widespread, a result of the principles of the then comparatively new theory of evolution applied to human societies and used as a basis for morality. The dire consequences of this line of ethical thought culminated then of course in the Third Reich. At least, Jack London, who had himself a rather racist upbringing, kept questioning his own racial views.

I loathe Wagner the man. He was such a contradiction, mostly toward the negative; he wrote despicable things about Jewish people yet had Jewish friends. He actually wrote an essay on the advantages and techniques of beating women. He was even more concerned about his celebrity than Patton. Beethoven is probably my favorite composer, in particular his 9th as well as his late string quartets and sonatas. However, Wagner is my favorite artist. So I think that pertains to the topic lol.
