I read the book a few years ago by Dan Simmons. It's a what if? story set in 1846-7 about the Erebus and Terror and their icy journey. In this, the sailors fight the elements and a mysterious giant beast. Three eps in and I'm enjoying it a lot. It's both claustrophobic on the stricken vessels and the shows the ships as tiny specs on a vast sea if ice. The effects are mostly excellent and it looks freezing. The score is efficiently creepy and has some nice eerie moments, I'd like to hear it away from the show. Good stuff. The book lost me in the last 50 pages or so, so I'm interested to see if I respond to it better here. The acting is excellent. Ciaran Hinds and Jared Harris are wonderful to watch, and as the show is going along the other characters are beginning to emerge. Toby Menzies is very good too.

I liked the book. I will probably go into Demand and start watching it. My problem with AMC is that at times this station will present about 5 minutes of the show followed by 4 minutes of advertising. This drives me nuts! You are right there, Joan. I'm fast forwarding through ads a lot and it's a total chore. It'd definitely be more rnjoyable played as a box-set, ad-free.

The Terror is a GREAT limited series on every level on AMC that has me salivating for more. From the amazing film like production values, cinematography that makes me think of Roger Deakins or Adrian Biddle, highly detailed art and set design, smart writing and an excellent cast, etc. , I'm amazed this is on AMC!. It looks like it should have been a HBO production. A critic sort of summed it up nicely but not entirely accurately, calling it a cross between "Master and Commander" and "The Thing". And I think this is a series that would actually even be better if binged watched, because each episode shows the plight of the 2 ships crews becoming more and more dire as the time drags on. The Terror so far is my favorite show on television that I've seen this year. Thos are great thoughts, Tom, and an apt description. I was also amazed it looked like they'd put so much money into it. I'm just wondering how the beast will come across when seen. I hope it is well done.

The scene itself is extraordinarily suspenseful but they did cheat somewhat in showing little detail due to the snowstorm and in fact, the effects for the beast are probably the shows only weak point, IMHO. But I was still on the edge of my seat when it attacked.

If it continues as it has I may buy the box set, especially if it has interesting extras and commentaries. The production design and costuming is really nice in this.

The series was excellent! Well worth a rewatch, which will probably pay-off for noticing secondary characters. The music was great throughout. Hopefully it'll get a release of some kind. I hope to watch it all again on blu-ray. The cgi beast though not the best was done well enough. The acting was excellent but Crozier, Hickey and Goodsir were particularly well played. I hope they don't do a direct sequel but something equally compelling but under The Terror banner. Maybe Dan Simmons' The Abominable. I haven't read it but it seems a good companion piece.
