Attention U.S. TCM Subscribers: Director Don Siegel's follow-up to Dirty Harry was a little crime caper that comparatively few took notice of perhaps because its title didn't suggest anything too exciting on the cinematic menu. The fact that it starred the often comedic Walter Matthau may have also contributed to the public's confusion over just what kind of film Charley Varrick was. U.S. TCM subscribers unfamiliar with this film have the chance to find out (updated) Thursday, August 9 at 11:15pm PST. It is also a previously reviewed Blu-ray recommendation here:

Nice arthur.

Wasnt it tweaked in u.s to be Kill charley varrick? Or was that just the poster?

Joe don baker - 30 years earlier - stole this film in the way javier bardem stole No country for old men and the way joe pesci stole Goodfellas. His chilling turn is the key to the movie's brilliance. And the unsettling performance of Andy Robinson.

"i didnt travel...600 miles...for the amusement of morons"

Thanks!

I believe that was just a poster, as was "Last of the Independents" added after the film's title.

Or how about the same character after being offered a free prostitute for the night: "I don't sleep with whores... at least not knowingly."

Joe don baker's lines in that film are all good.
Even the way he orders his breakfast.

You're right, Bill; he has an incredibly menacing presence, and at no time does he touch a gun.

If i ever write a thriller script, and i can deliver dialogue even half as sharp as charley varrick, i would be made up!

In fairness, the other actor who ate the scenery in Varrick, but in a different way due his creepy portrayal of harman sullivan, was Andy Robinson. As we discussed before, It was this and Scorpio in dirty harry which was so disturbing and realistic it frightened directors from giving him work for years. His career re-emerged years later with Hellraiser. How about that? Cast aside for being too good!!!

Sullivan: "...Then I got something I wanna hang onto you, jimmy dick! I've been waiting all my life to make a score like this, and now that it's here, I ain't waiting no more. I mean, I'm gonna wail. And I'm talking about chicks, cars, clothes, a box at the races, and beefsteak three times a day, and no washed up, chicken-shit son-of-a-bitch had better try stop me...!"
