MONDAY, MARCH 12

DUNE---director Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL, BLADE RUNNER 2049) commented on the status of his movie based on the sci fi novel, “DUNE will probably take two years to make. The goal is to make two films, maybe more.” The 1984 David Lynch movie starred Kyle McLachlan, Sting and Patrick Stewart.

MATT HELM---Bradley Cooper will star in this Paramount Pictures movie based on the spy novel series. George Clooney, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are the producers. Tom Shepherd is the writer. Dean Martin starred in four 1960s movies based on the novels.

CAPTAIN MARVEL---Samuel L. Jackson posted a photo of himself during the makeup process with the caption, “Caught a lil’ nap while going thru the process today!".
Fan speculation is that Jackson is a Skrull in the movie.

GREYHOUND---Elisabeth Shue (BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II) and Rob Morgan (MUDBOUND) will co-star with Tom Hanks in the movie based on the CS Forester World War II novel THE GOOD SHEPHERD in which an older captain of a Navy destroyer on his first combat assignment battles German u-boats.

LEONARD BERNSTEIN---supposedly Steven Spielberg is working on a Leonard Bernstein biomovie. After finishing INDIANA JONES 5, Spielberg will choose between the Bernsteion biomovie and the WESTSIDE STORY remake which Bernstein composed the score for.

CATCH-22---Christopher Abbott (THE SINNER) will star in the Hulu/George Clooney miniseries based on the Joseph Heller World War II novel. Alan Arkin starred in the 1970 Mike Nichols movie.

THE SIMPSONS---with Fox finally airing a cancelled 2006 O.J. Simpson special O.J. SIMPSON: THE LAST INTERVIEW, THE SIMPSONS showrunner Al Jean posted that O.J. Simpson turned down a guest star offer, 'Ironically OJ simpson airs on fox 25 years to the day after the episode we asked him to be in (pre-murders) and he turned down". Jean later posted what episode was involved, "last exit to Springfield fortunately he passed and we got Dr Joyce [Brothers]".

DOCTOR WHO---Alan Cumming confirmed he will guest star as King James I, “I’m about to go and do an episode of Doctor Who. I’m so excited! I’ve never been in it… [The character is] a nice baddie. I’m like a sort of dandy, foppy character who becomes alright in the end. They said he might come back.” He later apologized when he was informed that he was not supposed to reveal his guest star role.
Also, former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston commented on appearing in THOR: THE DARK WORLD and G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, “Working on something like GI Joe was horrendous. I just wanted to cut my throat every day. And Thor? Just a gun in your mouth. Gone in 60 Seconds was a good experience. Nic Cage is a gentleman and fantastic actor. But GI Joe and Thor were … I really paid for being a whore those times.”
He said he took these roles in the US because the BBC blacklisted for leaving DOCTOR WHO after only one season.

TRIVIA---this is the latest in a series about James Bond movie trivia.
Maude Adams appeared in three Bond movies in three different roles: THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, OCTOPUSSY and A VIEW TO A KILL.

Adams co-starred with Roger Moore, Christopher Lee and Britt Eckland in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN. Lee was a step-cousin of Ian Fleming and had been a candidate to star as James Bond.

Adams co-starred with Roger Moore in OCTOPUSSY.

Adams was visiting her friend Roger Moore while he was filming his last Bond movie, A VIEW TO A KILL, in San Francisco. As a favor, she did a cameo as a cable car rider wearing a hat and white-rimmed sunglasses.

Ironically, Adams was to co-star as a Russian spy with Peter Sellers in THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN, but she was later replaced by Lesley-Anne Down.

This photo shows Adams with a promotional pink BMW motorcycle from THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN before she was replaced by Lesley-Anne Down.

I laud the plans for "Dune", but I can't help but think there is too fine a line between making a Dune film and making a Dune film that will do well enough at the Box Office to warrant green-lighting party II and the sequels. I wish the project well - I'd love to finally see the story pan out more on-screen after being a fan of the books for many years....who knows!!

Loving the Trivia notes on these posts, by the way!

I may be thinking of another sci-fi/fantasy series, but was it DUNE that had the encylopedic listing of all the history/characters/monsters et al., in the backs of each book? I don't know if every entry was included in the books, but I apprciated the attention to detail and "world building" that went into those.

I think this happened with the DUNE novels...

Where is this ground swell of people who want more DUNE movies? Must be amongst the fanbase primarily. I've yet to see but one or two people excited for this. I read about it and have one giant apathetic resounding "MEH".

Ecclestone not get on with colleagues on Thor and Cobra? That's random. Glad he enjoyed working on Gone in 60 Seconds, watching it was a chore.

Interested in Dune purely because of the director.

Greyhound sounds interesting. Count me in for that.

Not sure what circles you frequent, but I've seen plenty of excitement for this among fellow film critics and buffs.

I think it's a fantastic idea (and great director 'casting'). The novel deserves at least ONE good screen adaptation.

Thank you for your interesting point of view.
Plenty of people already think it has one.

Dune seems to be one of those properties that everyone wants to film, but no one can quite grasp.
So far, I have a fondness for the David Lynch version, mostly because of its Baroque design, though it only works because of massive ongoing narration throughout.
I realize there have already been TV miniseries of both Dune and Dune Messiah, God help us. I used to have them both on DVD, but either lost or gave them away.
Has anyone here seen the documentary about Alexander Jodorowsky’s aborted version?
That looked fascinating.

The problem with Dune is the length it will have to be as a theatrical. You can't do Dune properly in two hours. It's talky. A large canvas with a big story to tell. So how many more hours will it take? Who in today's world of short attention spans will even attempt sitting in the theater that long anymore? What audience are they aiming for? How many showings can it have in theaters daily at that long a length? Perhaps it will be split between two parts over time. Nobody knows yet.

Villeneuve took some heat for the length of Blade Runner 2049. Even Ridley Scott admitted the new film was too long. It's probably best if Dune was broken up into a miniseries format on cable or some pay platform. A lot of people have mentioned this already. Villeneuve certainly can't afford another lackluster box office performance from what will no doubt be another very expensive effects film.

The doc is excellent.
Jodorowsky's enthusiasm is genuine and infectious, so it's all the more tragic that the film didn't get made.
The "bible" he created to try to get studios to invest... what I wouldn't give to have a copy.
The music for the doc, by Kurt Stenzel, is also outstanding--I can't recommend it enough (imagine TD scoring "Blade Runner" with 1974 synths and sequencers and you get some idea).

I absolutely love David Lynch's Dune, and the TV adaptations (which actually kinda cover three novels, not two) are well done in their own way...and this director has me excited for what he could pull off....don't get me wrong...i can't wait to see what he does....if it were up to me, he would make the whole damn series in to movies....i just have difficulty seeing a cinema-going world in these times where cerebral movies are going to make enough at the box office to make execs confident enough to cough up the cash....these are not action epics (though they do have their fair share, with an exception)....its deep political sci-fi writ large. I hope they pull it off, I really really do. And i will be there on opening night, you can bet your ass on that.

Don't get me wrong. I kinda like Lynch's DUNE. I just don't think it serves the source material right.

Fantastic documentary, seen it a few times.

Does Dune really need to be a series more like Game of Thrones or something? Ten hours a book? I never read them as theyre huge. They look like a lot would be chucked to make any film.

Love to see a Bernstein biopic
and
Gershwin too. Scorcese would be great for this; too bad it didn't happen.

Yeah, she was. Scaramanga really missed the boat with her.

Scaramanga had sex with Andrea Anders (Maud Adams) before each of his kills because it supposedly improved his aim.

If there was s "Bond girls who do nothing for me" she would be at the top.
