It's a shame that THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL has a lousy transfer. Reportedly, the DVD was lousy too. I don't think MGM has redone the transfer since the VHS/Laserdisc was released.
MGM has apparently done a new master of THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL, which is currently available for viewing on HDNet and Amazon Prime. Those who have seen it offer varying reports as to its aspect ratio and whether or not it includes the film's overture.
