Hi Gang, Some people may have been wondering what I've been up to the past few years. I have still been involved with CD projects, but mostly I have been writing film and TV screenplays (on spec) and raising our now three-and-a-half year old twin girls in the suburbs. The very bizarre and racy indie I produced a few years ago, "Lucky Bastard," was a great experience, and it led to some very exciting TV and film projects that I can't talk about yet. If they go forward, my life changes big time, but you can't count on anything. I have a sci-fi short film I want to direct that would lead to a low-budget, contained sci-fi feature. (Both scripts are written.) Because I have no production experience, my managers have told me I will have to self-finance the short film to show I can do this. (They are honest managers, which is why I like them!) I need $50K to do it properly. People have suggested "use Indiegogo," but the problem is that Indiegogo only works if either you or the property (or both!) are already famous. For example, people have raised over a million dollars to make a Star Trek fan film. But when those same people have tried to raise money for an original idea, they end up with table scraps. So I had an idea that is so crazy it just might work! I have asked some of the specialty soundtrack labels if they would consider lending stock to serve as the "perks" for the Indiegogo campaign. Donate $100, for example, and we'll send you eight free CDs (or something like that). We would select mostly catalog titles, not new releases. So far, the people I have asked (who shall remain nameless for their own protection) have been entirely supportive. What's in it for them: If or when the short film is successful and leads to a feature, the labels would be paid for the cost of the CDs out of the feature film budget. So if that happens, everybody wins! I get a movie career, the labels get to move stock that otherwise they wouldn't sell, and you, the fans, get to acquire CDs at sale prices...and you get to support my career and art, which I would appreciate very much! I think this would be a successful Indiegogo campaign because there's no waiting months or years for the typical indie movie perks ("phone call from the director"...jeez, who cares?)—you could get actual great merchandise right away! It would all depend on whether I can make a great sci-fi short film. After decades of magazines, books and CDs that I have produced, I have all the confidence in the world I can do this. Would anyone like to help Brainstorm exactly which perks (CDs) would be most attractive? Sadly I do not foresee James Horner's Brainstorm OST being part of this project...or even George Duning's Brainstorm! Though I would love both... Thank you, please post all of the ideas you have! Lukas

Being able to pick your choices of free CD's and when. so you don't have to select them all at once. Having first dibs of a new title a day before it's on sale, as one of your free titles. No pre-order troubles, no worrying about a title possibly selling out. Getting a free copy of the full score to the short film (if wanted).

This is a great idea Lukas. Being in Canada, I do not buy every CD I am interested in the moment they are released, because they are too damn expensive (it just cost me $71 Canadian for 1 $20 CD and 1 $25 CD through screenarchives, with shipping), so I often wait for low quantities or sales to snatch up what I am interested, which still includes MANY catalog titles from the various specialty labels. I would be on board with this idea. Assuming every contributor would not be able to send their personal wish list, maybe one idea would be, to expand on your example, 8 CDs for $100 from a given label or combination of labels, so long as they were released before a given date (and are still in print of course). Do you think the label owners would be receptive to something like that, or would they prefer to just contribute a flat amount of certain titles up front?

8 CDs for $100 is a great deal and a great idea to help move old stock just sitting there. However, since I often like the obscure stuff that maybe has less general appeal, I would need to be able to select which 8 CDs I would get...similar to Bruce's Kritzerland Indiegogo campaign. I will say that for myself personally, you wouldn't need to work with other labels necessarily, because I still need a couple dozen FSM titles (ones that have a good deal of stock, which is part of why I haven't prioritized getting them), if they are getting included in this. But great if you work out an arrangement with LLL/Intrada, because I'm sure there's stuff of theirs that would be great to have too. Yavar

Holy cow, people responded, thanks! As Indy said, "I'm making this up as I go." I'd have to eat the shipping costs to make this work, I think, which means that non-U.S. donors would basically be getting their collections subsidized...by me! Keep posting ideas! You can even post WHICH CDs you specifically want, why not!!! All of the labels have sizable warehouse spaces of...STUFF!!! I've been in them. I used to have one myself. It's like, am I ever gonna move all this product??? Lukas

Well from what I know of these types of campaigns the levelling can be really attractive for contributors, and there are a lot of awesome folks out there like Adam B. who just want to flat out contribute to the campaign. Usually with kickstarter or any other campaigns it's the contributors who pay shipping up front. They select their reward level - and then based on their location they pay the additional shipping cost to get it to them. I'd prefer to see you go that route to keep that $ in your pocket. If you want a good example look at Tommy Talarico's video games live kickstarter campaigns, and their reward tiers. Many are digital only or items like - signed front pages of score sheets etc, you can also look to the recent Score documentary fund raiser to get some insight. I will be back with more ideas later! Very excited for you. Here's SCORE's: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/432767873/score-a-film-music-documentary Some things are simple - like $5 - you earn my heartfelt thanks and appreciation. $10 - Social media shout out and desktop wallpapers (if you've got some pre-production art) $50 - CD Mystery Grab Bag - you get 5 CDs, no choice but know it's coming from a variety of these supporters - you can have multiple levels of this i.e. grab bag #1, #2, and #3 - to encourage more purchases - as long as each of those options had the same content. *have some in here that are not available by choices, or you can entice folks by saying "Random grab bags contain rare CD or item." If you want more choice, you pay for it. $75 - select 5 CDs from Group 1. $100 - select 8 CDs from group 1 or group 2 $200 - the ideas go on $5000 - executive producer credits, dinner with the soundtrack illuminati members (Donor labels). Dinner includes: Yummy Cheese bread, and learn the soundtrack illuminati secret handshake .

I guess Lukas doesn't remember the very successful Kritzerland Indiegogo, or the fact that I've done five other really successful Indiegogo campaigns for various theater projects and the Kickstarter for restoring The First Nudie Musical. I know exactly how these work and what perks appeal to people, and certainly from the Kritzerland campaign I've learned where the pitfalls are.

I'm in - perks are nice, but what you are trying to do is awesome, so as soon as the link is live for me to support, I'm in!

Complete short film score is obviously a must as one of the perks... depending on who would score it ;-) If he could get Doug Fake to score it and Dan Schweiger to star in it, the score community would lose its collective mind. PS: Ooo ooo, and Thor writing the novelization!

CDs we're interested in, why not indeed! Assuming Kritzerland, La-La and Intrada would be the labels you are MOST likely to work with, here're my lists (I bought a bunch of Kritzer CDs when they had a big holiday xmas sale, so I don't really have a list for them currently): La-La: Apocalypse Now The Bad Seed Die Another Day Die Hard reissue Ferdinand The Great Race Patriot Games Sons of Katie Elder Star Trek TOS box set Titanic Waterworld Intrada: Roger Rabbit Damnation Alley Robin Hood Shogun MacKenna's Gold Cosmos 1-4 Honey I Blew Up The Kid Caine Mutiny Troy Poltergeist II Day of the Locust Rocketeer Chinatown

That was one of the reasons I thought to do this. I was not aware of your other campaigns. I would love to hear your advice! Lukas

When you begin some kind of production on it, I can create the IMDb page for you. Even if you want the title a secret, I can still put something like "Untitled Lukas Kandel Science Fiction Short". And that way Jones can have an extra credit on his IMDb page.
