One of my very first compilation CD`s I ever bought was The Music of John Carpenter performed by the Splash Band.
Well many of the track titles is in German and some I can understand but there is one that does not make any sense especially after a google search. The 2nd track is called Unheimliche Schattenlichter. According to Google that`s the german title of Twilight Zone: The Movie. And as far as I know John Carpenter was not involved in that movie at all.
I am far from an expert when it comes to John Carpenter and his movie and music but this is something I have always wanted to know about.
I have always wondered about this as well. My 2 cents. It's a track made by the Splash band specifically for this record. It's credited to Carpenter so it appears it's by him? Speculation though

You give the explanation yourself! It doesn't make any real sense, except to fill the CD with another track. Or it is an error in the assignment of title and composer. Whatever, is ultimately irrelevant. The fact is, that it is a sampler CD that collects disco/trance/techno versions(more of film titles than original compositions inspired). The CD is expected to be completely meaningless for 99 percent of all serious film music collectors. The LP(1984) and then the CD(1989 +Re-issue 2015) was certainly only produced to be able to participate in the(at that time) beginning trend of techno/trance music adaptations. At that time it was still almost exclusive music of a underground culture or music scene. I've heard the CD once a long time ago and was very disappointed, and that's enough for the rest of my life. I hope my comment helps somehow.
Sounds like a 'bonus' thing -- a free interpretation of the original TWILIGHT ZONE theme -- that is not uncommon for these cheapo compilations. Even if it has nothing to do with John Carpenter.

Actually, that track appears to be a very free Carpenteruesque adaptation of the Jerry Goldsmith scored fourth seqment "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" from the movie TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, which was indeed called UNHEIMLICHE SCHATTENLICHTER in Germany. (With a dash of the TV Twilight Zone Theme by Marius Constant thrown in.)
